When you live in a rural area one of the negatives is that unwanted dogs get dumped and wander starving to your house. We feed them an then take them to the local animal shelter. We decided that the next non-agressive dog we would keep. She showed up about a month ago and we named her Whipper because her shape looked like a whippet breed.

We began to wonder exactly what breed or breeds she was and what her inherited tendencies were. We saw, at the big pet store, that you could send a swabbing of the dog's cheek and the types of breeds in the mutt would be identifies through her DNA. We sent them in a couple of weeks ago, and they are suppose to be here this week. I will post them when they come in.

Any guesses to what kind of breed/breeds Whipper is?

She definitely looks to have quite a bit of black lab in her, not sure about the rest.
Did she sustain some sort of injury to her tail or is that the natural length?

Your cat sure does seem to have taken to her:)

That's interesting, hadn't heard about doggie dna.

Okay, I will guess lab+pointer+greyhound, all nice dogs.

Lab + Weimaranaer or Lab + GSP

We have eight dogs total.....english pointer,short-hair...had labs for thirty years...I would guess lab+german short-hair...could be an excellent bird dog, looks like she wants to point..give it a try.Our females go about 35 pounds ,this dog looks about the same weight. One of the first pointers I hunted with looked exactly like this dog, mutt from the pound ,would hunt anything.Good -luck:)

The tail appears natural. The cat (also a stray) and her are best buds. We all go on morning and evening walks.

I'm looking up the breeds mentioned and I can see them in her.

If the tail seems to be that length naturally, then I will have to guess that there is some sort of short haired pointer mixed with the black lab. Seems like that would make a pretty darn nice dog.

Here's another vote for lab pointer.

Lab for sure and then I'm thinking Weimaraner because of the short tail and coat.

She's a pure Betteroff, as in she's a whole lot betteroff with you than she was before.:D

I'm thinking that somebody paid to have her tail bobbed and she may have gone walkabout away from home. However, if she doesn't have a collar, it's hard to say. Maybe somebody couldn't keep her and just dumped her. I'm guessing that she has not been spayed, but she doesn't look like she's ever nursed a litter.

Does he have webbed paws? I know GSP's do, but I am unsure if that trait is recessive.

All GSP's and Weimaraners have their tails docked when they are a pup. The short tail to me seems very odd. If you look at weims from europe were they do not dock tails as much, they are vey long.

Yes she does have webbed paws! The vet thought she was about 8 months old when we took her in for her shots. She had no collar or microchip.

Jim, good one!

dna testing is quite common in dogs and birds(i delve in both) the clubs dna test for regestration purposes and bird breeders dna test to se x the chicks. certain breeds have different markers.

My first question when I saw your post was. What about the Cat? Then I saw the last picture.
Great match.

Lab, one of the running breeds (greyhound, whippet, etc.) and German Short Haired Pointer.

She looks like she could be a good dog.
