Good dog! Did you tell him to stay, or is that what he does?

My Border Collie will no longer chase a rabbit. She was hot after one once and I called her off (partially to see if she would call off and because they were headed towards the road). She dutifully stopped and turned back to look at me. For some crazy reason the rabbit did a 180 and bolted straight back at her. She turned back to look at the rabbit about the time the rabbit was going straight through her legs. Freaked her out about rabbits ever since.

She’s a girl doggie.

I just bring her to the hunting fields , the rest is up to her.

I posted a couple weeks ago about a feral cat having a litter in my shed. She moved on and took the litter, but left this one behind. I didn’t realize this is common for cats. Got some kitten formula from the feed store. My bride is excellent at caring for infants. Kitten seems healthy and happy.

I think unwanted cats and dogs make the best companions because they know that you cared for them enough to bring them in. Two of our best dogs ever were a brother-sister package from the English Springer Rescue Association. We just stumbled onto these dogs.

They were loyal, protective, inseparable and one was a great bird dog. We never had any problem and the two took over our place and had a wonderful life.

As have mentioned in this or other threads, when one died the other became despondent and just stared out the window. We tracked down the kennel they originally came from, bought a descendant dog of theirs and the remaining dog accepted the pup as his "sister" and was happy again till his final days last year.

Middle pic is original bro and sis, last pic is adopted sister. If he knew of the switcheroo, he never said anything.

I've noticed that the deer seem to have mother/sibling family groups, too.

Feral cat life is tough row to hoe. I have 2. One in each barn.
They get a safe place to sleep with little kibble and fresh water. Been about 3 or 4 years now and 1 comes to feeding. The other hates when I see here. But the do a good job on the rodents.

Let me add to that and see if anything to this. We noticed by accident and over several years that our dogs would bark and be wary of strangers but were far less wary around my cousins and other blood relatives. I now guess they can smell the family "pack" and are OK with it. Anyone else think this way?

Hadn't thought of it, but dogs have such a keen sense of smell that it could be so.

I wouldn't have expected it to happen, but two of the most affectionate cats we ever had started off as untamed ferals. This one showed up at the barn. Ran away from any contact, but showed up at the house thin and hungry with four kittens a few months later. My wife found homes for the kittens pretty easily, but no one wanted the mama because she was so feral and hostile. Took about six months of taming, but she is now a very affectionate cat.

It only takes a few weeks before typical rodents are eradicated by a cat in such a small environment...feral cats will kill for the sake of killing whether they are fed or not...

IMO...trying to justify allowing cats to run free for the sake of rodent control shows a lack of responsibility...!

Tell city folks to quit dumping their unwanted pets in the country.
Small space in my case is 90+ acres plus 1000's of wilderness.
The cats have not run out rodents around here just like the dogs have not run out coyotes.
2 years ago I took 100+ raccoons in less than 6 months that were trying to kill chickens, they did get a few plus some cats. BTW that is using 1 live trap emptied as needed, not poisons or random shooting.
Still no shortage of raccoons I see several every evening, but if they don't break into the coop they are welcome to forage.

90 acres is hardly a barn...and I fully understand that it is a people problem not an animal problem...
As for native animals...it's us humans that are invading their space not really the other way around...

Well they do sleep in barns, shed, etc.
Point being native animals are no kinder or less destructive.

True but so where the American Indians, Inuits and Neanderthal. I'm not here to wipe them out, unlike the suburban american that poisons everything they don't like most of the time. Think Moles, mice, wasps, bees, the list goes on. I prefer to target my problems, the ones that take food away from my family. Wasp, moles, hornets are fine to have around, as are bats, and most birds, since they eat mosquitoes, flies and stuff.
Poultry helps with ticks and other pests, geese will eat the weeds but do take a toll on tomatoes, cabbage and lettuce (still figuring it out but I like geese).
I can't control nature but try to coexist and avoid paving the world.

For the most part...idiots kill animals that they see as problems because they are not as smart as the animals they kill...
