Don't give up, they grow up to be great dogs with good instincts. They do everything to test you the 3 years, there is always a bunch for sale (or free) between 14 mo and 28 mo old. They are stubborn (seeing if they can be the alpha), and like to "expand" their boundaries. Some will try to claim many sq miles other are happy with a few acres, few accept less unless trained. Many give up because of chicken killing, I have free range waterfowl and chickens, and THAT issues is trained out of them early, yet each dog takes different levels of correction. For some it's a harsh word, other act like you need to kill them to get them to give up. We found a water in a spray bottle and hitting the eyes works wonders (YMMV) on even the hardest dog.
They are capable of great violence but are just big teddy bears with everything that belongs to them (owners included)
I still do not know how they can "disappear' in the middle of a field with no cover but they ALL know that trick by they time they are 3. I'll look for them and they "pop" up right behind me.
The do want to be your partner just do it different than most other dogs.
