Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

I've seen people do that. I have had the opportunity when traveling with my Grandmother, who has a "mirror sign". But, I park out where I'm supposed to. I have helped my paternal Grandmother as she has slowed down. I helped my maternal Grandfather a lot when he was in a wheel chair in the 70's, when Handicap spots were not so common. We never had a sign; we parked and hoofed it with the wheel chair over distance.

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

I have done the same thing in the past, but then started thinking about what if their handicap wasn't obvious and I did that?

I figure they will be judged and sentenced by a much higher power than me, so now I try to not say anything. It still irks the heck out of me though how inconsiderate some people can be. I'm trying that kinder, gentler approach.

I like the idea of calling the cops though. Probably the best solution considering all the psycho's that are out there.

I did have to get involved recently when I saw a drunk man strike his female companion while sitting in a car at a convenience store. Now THAT really ticks me off!

Yes, chasing a little white ball around with a stick is no life at all! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But seriously, you did the right thing. Maybe she'll think about it the next time she's tempted to do it. Maybe she'll remember what a hassle it was to be harrassed by some guy in a Target store and think it's not worth it. As adults some of us now know more than our parents did(that was their dream, right... a better life for my child) and hopefully we have learned from their mistakes. Remember, when I was a kid there were no handicapped parking spots, we rode without seatbelts even though we had them, we left our car and house doors unlocked, and we sat in the car while our parents went into the store. We didn't have bicycle helmets, antibiotic soap or medpoint right around the corner. We keep learning stuff, and hopefully you taught her a lesson. For the right or wrong reasons, she may never leave the child in the car alone again. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif You may have a point. But I'm a hard headed Norwegian, so I'll just keep doing it 'cause even on the worst day on the course it's a WHOLE lot better than the best day at the office! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your comment does remind me, though, of the Chinese businessman who visited the U.S. for the first time. His American counterparts wanted to show him a good time while he was here, so one day they took him golfing. That evening he wrote a letter to his wife in which he explained that the Americans had this strange game they played. He said, "They hit this little white ball with a real skinny stick all around a big field and try to hit it into a hole in the ground. They call the game OH S _ _ _ !" /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

MossRoad, you just had to do it, didn't you????

Changes to all of the above can be traced back to "litigation". (lawyers). /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

I came across a baby unattended in a car at the grocery store last summer and, after looking around for a couple minutes (and only a couple minutes) to see if someone had just put the child in the car and was returning their cart, I dialed 911.

I waited with that car until the police arrived (less than five minutes, I'd guess) and was still answering their question when the couple who owned the car appeared pushing their full cart from the store. Not one person, but two, with a cart so full they had to have been in there at least half an hour.

Needless to say, I think you did the right thing and, if anything, not enough as opposed to too much.

/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gifChoke, gasp, cough, gag......ICKY STUFF!!

My sister has kidded me for years that I'm not a true Norwegian because I absolutely HATE lutefisk!

But hey, I make up for it with lefse, krumkka, and rosettes!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Nothing better than lefse, butter and a little sugar.
AHHHH Valhalla.

Well this explains a lot. Us Norwegians tend to say what is on our minds, good or bad. Not that we often have much on our minds!

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

Next time call 911 if there is a baby in there. After all you are not a trained medical person so how are you to know if the baby is OK or in distress. I bet if she came back with the police surrounding her van she would get the picture.
At that though, I have decided, unless life and liberty and democracy are at stake--I mind to my own buisness--something more people could do more of.
If I had seen the baby or a animal in a locked cold or hot vehicle, I would have called 911. J

Fivestring,

Here the fine is $250.00.

I hate writing parking tickets, but I may have run out of ink writing to this lady. Maybe even a Notice to Appear for child neglect depending on the situation.

My suggestion is call 911. If you call DCF and tell them a kid is locked in the car alone, they're going to tell you to call 911.

A "child unattended and locked in a car" call will be a fairly high priority with a quick response time.

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

Gary,

First a confession: I did not read the entire thread... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

As probably everyone said: You did right and good!

I see so many "apparently healthy" people parking in handicapped spots. I personally have failed to confront them... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

When my father was alive and struggling with an O2 tank, handicapped spots were frequently filled by people who were able to walk as well I can.

Now the reply might be: "Are you a doctor? My doctor authorized this plaque..." And the reply might be: " If you don't need that spot why not leave it open for someone who does?"

Hindsight is 20/20. If I ever have a similar experience I hope I just call 911 and report a baby abandoned in a car...and see how it works out.

More of us should be like you, Gary...

Re: Do I Need to \"Get A Life\"?????

Gary,
About a year ago I caught one these phonies at the local Walmart. Saw her and her daughter circling the parking lot and it looked like they didn't want to take a spot that would require a small walk. Instead, they pulled their van into the closest handicap spot near the store. I don't usually say anything to these types but since my Dad is unable to walk anymore and he sometimes can't find a spot at the store, I decided to speak out. When the woman and her daughter emerged from the van they looked around and started walking. When they got to the store entrance I confronted her and said, do you have a sticker for that van that permits you to park in the handicap spot. She and her daughter looked at me kinda dumbfounded, ignored me, and then walked to through the entrance to the store. She then stopped dead in her tracks, used a swear word or two, did an about face, and headed back to the van, her daughter following in haste. She jumped into the van and sped out of the spot and out of the parking lot, I guess she ran over to the other department store and tried the same stunt. My best guess was that she probably thought I was going to call the law and she might get a ticket so she had a change of mind.
I have, since that time, not said anything to anyone who parks illegally in those spots, there are just too many folks ignoring the law nowadays. I really think that this behavior is just a sign of the times, a complete disregard for others and putting oneself first.
