I bought a trailer in 2012 that is rated at 14k and the sticker and invoice says it has 7k axles. My question is, if the axles are Dexter, D60, which online says they are 6k axles, does a different hub and 8 bolts make them rated at 7k? I'm a little confused.
I'd appreciate someone familiar with Dexter axles offering an opinion.

Thanks!

can't speak to axles, but while you're checking, you might note tire-size/ply/load-rating at ?psi

Is it a GN, 5th Wheel, or BP? Two 6K axles which are 6 lug with 16" wheels usually will carry 12,000# of the weight. Then about 13% tongue/pin weight will give you the other 2,000# capacity.

As mentioned above, this is all a mute point depending on the tires.

I found some info here RV.Net Open Roads Forum: Toy Haulers: Al-Ko to Dexter axel conversion.. Info is supposed to be from Dexter FWIW.

From what I read briefly, the bearings are larger on the D70, as well as the tube wall thickness. Seems that the D60 can also be ordered with the heavier wall thickness.

From what I see in this PDF on page 33 http://dexteraxle.com/i/u/6149609/f/1-7K_Marine_Catalog_6-11/1-7K_Complete_Marine_Catalog_6-11.pdf is that the hub and brake group is the same for #5500-#7000 axles. Maybe just the tube thickness?

You might try crawling under and looking for a manufacturer's tag on the axle ---- mine are tagged with rated capacity. It's easier for me because my trailer is a dump --- it's easier for me to raise the trailer than slide around on my back.

This is how I slide around on my back, a creeper with 5" diameter casters. :D

I was told by All Pro trailers in Jacksonville FL that the difference is in the undercarriage configuration, 6000 lb 8 lug axle set up would be a fixed spring hanger as opposed to a 7000 lb being a slipper spring set up. All I can tell you is what I was told.??!!! I ran into similar situation changing rear axle on my trailer, that is why I questioned it.

I have an older trailer that I was replacing an axle on and I bought a axle from All Pro trailers in Jacksonville FL. , I was told by them that the difference was in the spring hangar configuration, fixed being 6000 lb and slipper spring being 7000lb. But after getting new axle home the new one had more camber than the old one, in fact I did not check it but the old one appeared fairly straight in comparison.

Nothing like a double, I thought I had canceled the first one.

My tires sizes were correct for 14k axle, however, the axle was stamped D60 which corresponds to the Dexter 6k axle. The axle tubes are the same in 6-7k but the hubs, bearings, brakes are bigger on the 7k. The dealer noted that the wrong axles were installed on this trailer when I purchased it.. a year and a half ago. Looks like someone screwed up but they are making it good. I'm not sure how that happens. there is a big white sticker hidden below the deck but face up that says "6,000 pound capacity D60"
