Recently got a DK40 HST. Previously had a CK 25 which sipped fuel . The DK seems to burn a lot more per hour. Does the fourth cylinder make that big a difference. I have no specifics other than I have been running it at about 2100-2300 RPM for extensive box blade work. Seems like it hits E pretty quickly. Not in a matter of minutes but seems quicker than with the CK. There are no fuel leaks as far as I can tell. What is a typical gallons per hour fuel burn at the above RPM.

Oh yes: This new beast is a dream.

Thanks.

Your GPH will improve over time. Just enjoy it in the meantime, seriously, they usually improve with use. My understanding is the fuel gauges on these are not totally accurate; meaning as the fuel gets lower the gauge MAY not show what actual amount is left. Try noting how much fuel you add when gauge shows empty. It may not reflect the tank capacity. You could also try lowering your RPMs slightly, depending on need, while BBing.

FWIW, the ag. engineering literature estimates of average diesel fuel consumption per rated PTO-hp range from 0.044 to 0.048 gallons per hour under average operating RPMs.

Make that gal/hr/hp. Diesel fuel consumption depends mainly on how much HP the engine is producing.

I had the same thoughts and did exactly what you did, started a thread about it. In fact, our threads seem to be almost identical in the first post. (http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/kioti-owning-operating/257618-beast-pig.html) The tank is apparently shaped like a cone but reads as if it were a cylinder. If you make sure you fill it right up, you'll find it's actually pretty light on fuel, not as light as a CK, but a lot better than you're thinking now.

I figured I was using about a gal/hour doing heavy work like box blading. Also there seems to be alot of reserve near empty but I try not to run it that low.

My working RPM burns about 1 gallon per hr on my DK40HST. Yes the fuel tank sender read empty when there is still almost 5 gallons in the tank....that's a heck of a "reserve"

I think that is the issue. It seems to hit empty but likely lots more fuel in the tank. Just a bit disconcerting when you fill the tank and a couple of hours later your needle is hovering at E. I just may run it at E and see how much work time I have left. i'd think no harm just bleed off the air if needed.

Thanks everyone

My DK45S still has in excess of 5 gal in the tank when the gauge reads empty. I use very little fuel unless I'm running a PTO load (like a mower), which consumes HP at high RPM. Just moving around and running the loader seems to use very little fuel. But my gear-transmission tractor runs at pretty low RPM for most loader work (vs high RPM with a mower). I suspect the HST version will use considerably more fuel because of the higher required engine RPM, At higher RPM, all kinds of parasitic losses (from the cooling fan to viscous forces in the tranny) will consume engine power in the HST models.
