Diving into Ham Radio... uh oh!

That's the radio I think I considered a while back. Doesn't it have a pretty waterfall?

Time, my friend, Time! I seem to get less and less done, even when I have the time. There is also no small matter of what one can talk about. Not much into talking about the mundane or the weather really. Funny, because I specifically remember my license instruction, saying no superfluous communications, yet that is EXACTLY what you often encounter. Me and my HAM friends always kidded each other saying "Fine Business Old Man" a term you often heard on the bands.

I hear ya, IT. I guess there are three reasons I am getting into it. First, just really interested in learning and the challenge I never tackled when I switched from pursuing EE to an ME degree and not following my father's footsteps. Second, being able to help in case of an emergency if possible. And third, having a hobby if (knock on wood), that I am unable to continue if my other more mobile hobbies become too difficult.

Time sure seems to be speeding up for me as I age. You are right there isn't enough hours in the day to learn and do all I want... and to hopefully pass on some knowledge to others.

My GOD is time ever speeding up!!!!!

I learned code (just barely), and could certainly send better than copy. I liked reading license plates while driving in code. I always kind of wished I could have a QSL in CW. Don't know why really though. Something about telling people you know morse code maybe. Don't know how many that might impress today. Might as well tell them you know smoke signals.

RTTY was something that truly facinated me. Then Packet radio, but the Internet and digital revolution just took away the appeal for me.

ICOM IC-7300. Pretty excited. I know it is a huge learning curve but I figured this will likely be my first and last unless I get a handheld.

Great Choice!!

Personal Computers and smart devices have captivated me for the past 30+ years. But now my PC and the internet are pretty much just tools to me that I use constantly, but the novelty itself isn't as interesting as it once was.

Ham radio is... I guess a retro throwback thing I feel I should explore before it's too late!

I've been licensed since 1963 in high school. I mostly operate CW (Morse code) and sometimes the digital modes (computer to computer via the radio.)

When I started, there was magic communicating to someone hundreds or thousands of miles away. Today, cell phones and the internet have made that common place. But ham radio still has many facets to enjoy. It's really a collection of many different hobbies.

One of the most active areas today is using digital techniques to communicate via signals so weak that we cannot hear them.
