Diving into Ham Radio... uh oh!

I have been since the mid 80s. Always just involved with UHF and VHF (often sophisticated repeater systems) before cell phones and cheap long distance. Unfortunately, there isn't much appeal for me anymore as mobile communication is commonplace. Used to be just for Police, Fire, business and HAMS!

I only have 231 lookups. haha.

not active anymore, used it for search and rescue ops when I lived in Michigan. I guess I should update my FCC form.

I was first licensed in 1972 while in high school. I dropped out of the hobby when life/family/job interfered. I always wanted to get back in. In 2018 I got all three levels passed and got on HF again. I started relearning Morse code and have been active since. I also do VHF/UHF and Fusion digital modes. My favorite in CW(Morse Code) it is very simple and a retro way of communication. Still very effective and is having a resurgence in popularity.

Good to hear guys! Keep posting... will be fun to see the TBN Ham club. My transceiver is enroute. Setting up the 'shack' as we speak and learning what I can. I look forward to connecting with you all on this other medium!

On learning... seems like I am drinking from a firehose. :newhere:

The Ham Whisperer

Fantastic resource. I had my daughters take it 10 years ago before we went to disney figuring FRS would be jammed. Picked up a few cheap baofeng 888s and while they were 12 and 13 i felt comfortable letting them roam around the harry potter area while my wife and i sat comfortably.

Ive been a ham since 1958 ( K1HJC). Received my first license in my junior year in high school
and have been active on and off since then.
It's a great hobby.

And cab drivers, aka hacks. I drove cab for a few years, fit my school schedule and introduced me to the most interesting people.

Motorola and GE owned that business.

I always was a 'wanabee ham' but the learning the code was my downfall.
Had relatives and neighbors that had their tickets even had a close friend (an MD) that had the handle VE2MD.

Ironically I ended owning an avionics facility and we manufactured an aviation HF ssb radio.
Then as pilot I had a radio operator's license and later on became a director of the AEA (Aircraft Electronics Assoc)
As such I even gave a lecture on HF propagation to a room full of qualified techs.
But neve got a 'ham' ticket, but knowing all the jargon sure helped.

Interesting times, and I still miss that comradery.
