Direct TV vs Dish Network

/ Direct TV vs Dish Network #41
25 years ago if somebody told you that you'd be paying $187/mo for TV you would have said they were crazy. But before cell phones I think I paid $15/mo for phone (which included my dial-up connection to the internet).

This reminds me of the time about 35 years ago I stopped at convenience store with my grandfather and I brought him a bottle of water. He went home to my grandmother ranting that I was a idiot had more money than brains, I had paid someone 50 cents for a glass of water. He walk over and turned the kitchen facet on to run a few minutes and said there about $5.00 worth.

Lordy he would sit straight up from the grave if he seen some of this stuff today!

Follow up to my original post. I switched to Dish Network on Saturday. I got the Hopper 3 in the living room with a 4k Joey for the bedroom. First impressions, I made a good choice. I also bought an Amazon Echo that integrates with the Hopper for voice commands, it works very well. I called Direct TV and cancelled on Saturday also, they didn't seem overly concerned I was leaving them.

Your grandpa was right! I still can't believe it when I see someone paying for a bottle of ----->water!

My nephew worked at a bottled water plant, like he always said, "nothing spl. about it, except we get suckers to buy it!" lol

It reminds me of those I see drop their change, look down at it and walk away!

I'll stay on subject by saying, we STILL like Direct TV. lol

$90 a month is cheap entertainment. I can always find something worth watching. Go out to dinner and the movies one time and you have spent $100 +. Here's a few of my favorites to watch

The First 48
Joe Kenda Homicide Hunter
NHRA Drag Racing on FS1
The Goldberg's on ABC
What would you do with John Quiñones
Impractical Jokers
The Carbanero Effect

Just to name a few

The Carbanero Effect
The others :confused3:

None of the list does anything for me.

I also go to few movies, just don't like what they offer.

But i do like eating out!!

Well, you can choose to live under a rock, just don't ***** about it. Not all of us like the same things, that's what makes us unique. I love the Detective shows and the murder investigation stuff. And I will admit it, giving up my manhood here, but I watch DWTS with my wife. Those dancing chicks are nothing short of amazing and smokin hot.

Hope that wasnt aimed at me...I was just expressing my opinion, not knocking yours..

I also watch DWTS with my wife. Thats OTA, still free.

I have had Dish for 20 yrs now, mainly for sports.

I will admit, I was very reluctant to switch from Direct TV to Dish. But Direct finally pissed me off enough to switch. I couldn't be happier. The Hopper 3 is a fantastic DVR and the interface is very easy to use. I will also say that the Amazon Echo works very well with the Hopper 3.

I own my dish equip, direct would only lease.

A friend of mine owned his own equipment... Well, it became his after two years and when he started having problems with it, the provider wanted him to pay for replacement!

I don't own mine and after a few years it started acting up, they came out and replaced the receiver and remote...no charge...

I switched to dish about 15 years back. Because Direct kept raising the rates. Which Dish does also but not as often. I've had same 2 receivers for about 11 years and one stared messing up. So called Dish. They sent out a tech who installed 2 new receivers at no cost. The only issue is I have to reprogram the timers and favorites guide listing.

They charge you monthly to rent their equipment, around $5 a receiver last I saw.
Dont remember what i paid for my HD Receiver, maybe $400, but over 15 yrs it would have cost me around $900 to rent. If you switch back and forth between dish and direct it doesnt make sense to own, but has worked for me. I did finally add their insurance to mine, so if it fails they will replace it free, think that was $4 month, so cutting into my savings some. I have done all my own installs, need to move the dish again, trees starting to block it some.

I don't think I have the maintenance option. When it was set up I had 2 receiver units with 2 receivers in each. One unit has the dvr function so I can record 2 programs at the same time. I have the local channels and the cost total is 98.98/mth for the 120 pkg
.

I don't believe Dish or Direct allows you to buy their equipment any more. I just returned my Direct TV receiver and 1 remote to them today. They didn't want the 2 Genie mini's back or anything else back, just the DVR and 1 remote. When Direct TV first came out way back when you could actually buy a self install kit and do the install yourself. Pretty simple stuff actually if you have any wiring experience.

Been awhile, but last i checked dish did, direct didnt.
Amazon sells dish equipment.

/ Direct TV vs Dish Network #58
just looked at my bill, prices have gone up. $9 for maintenance, $7 just to have dvr capability, $7 for 2nd receiver.

/ Direct TV vs Dish Network #59
Definitely can still outright buy dish equipment. My receiver now $99. $250 for hopper. At $9 month maintenance, probably should drop it.

We've collected a few times on the maintenance...

So far, they have replaced the box to a MUCH better one and also replaced the remote.

They have also replaced a wire I hit with the snow blower (my fault) AND fixed, I don't know what, when the dish went out... I actually believe that time it was the installers fault?

I'm not big on "insurance", but this one seems to be working out...
