woods 6500 groundbreaker dipperstick won't hold posistion, was hoping someone could help narrow down issue, not a big deal to pull cylinder and get rebuilt if that is the problem, wasn't sure if problem could be in the control valve.... any input much appreciated

So when you lift the dipper up and neutralize the valve it drops? Most likely the cylinder is leaking. Cheapest, first place to look. Resealing should take care of it.

Depends on what part of the country you are in, but maybe $150-200.

Which way is the cylinder drifting, extending or retracting? If retracting it is the valve, if extending could be valve or cylinder seals.

Be aware, some shops want to re-bore or hone the cylinder wall! That's a big up charge...
I got bagged for an extra $300 for that one time.

I’ve never heard of reboring a hydraulic cylinder. Honing yes. But really, if it is leaking internally and there is damage to the cylinder, you’ll will need to consider replacement.

You can isolate the cylinder from the valve If you have the equipment or means to safely support that load while you remove and cap or plug the rod end hose and then let the load sit on the retracted cylinder. If cylinder extends now you know it is the cylinder seals. If cylinder does not move then points towards the valve.
