Tractor
kubota b7100
I have a '95 Kubota B7100 hst. This tractor runs great once started and also starts immediately when the engine is warm.
The problem, or question, is how much should I have to turn it over before it starts? I always turn the key on for 20-30 seconds before turning it over; however, it coughs and sputters and usually takes another 20 to 30 seconds to start. And it doesn't matter whether it hasn't run for a week or if I ran it the day before.
Now, this may not seem to be a problem, but I am wondering if it should start easier. I guess my real concern is that I will wear out the starter through unnecessary overuse.
Do I have a problem, or is this normal for starting this tractor with about 600 hours of run time?
Thanks!

It should start right up like it does when the engine is warm. Sounds like your glow plugs are not working.

Suggest you do not run the starter for more then 20 seconds. Different tractor but a comparsion mine is a 1999 with 584 hours and starts with just the flick of the key, even if it seats for a few weeks.

Has it always been this way or just got worse over time? May not be that it is cold, but just sitting awhile. While crack is it smoking, no might want to replace the fuel filter or at least drain if you can and add fuel conditioner, which also helps clean the injectors. Might want to drain some fuel from the bottom of the tank if you can as sediment maybe down there. Might even want to check the fuel line, if it is rubber for holes and age.

What do mean by "turn the key on"??????

As I recall the glow plugs require turning the key LEFT to preheat

Yes make sure you are using the glow plugs. Turn left to glow, right to start.

I thought I'd better followup. I didn't believe the 'turn the switch left' and hold answer, but it was correct. I was totally unaware of that spring loaded feature. I tried it and the B7100 roared to life quickly when I turned the ignition key. So, pardon my ignorance, and thanks for the replies.
fwiw---tractor is 40 miles from home and I didn't get to it until the weekend.
