I noticed while reading Nebraska Tractor Test reports for the 5103, 5203, 5303 and 5403 that all use the same engine, and all are turbocharged, but as the PTO horsepower increases for each variant, the fuel flow and turbo boost increases.

Does JD modify the engines in any other way to increase durability as they get more power out of the same basic engine?

The bottom end of the motors are all the same. In the engines you are talking about, there are just injector and maybe a turbo difference between the motors. In the 4x20 series, its just programing of the computer that give the HP difference. Some of the larger tractors might have head changes to make the higher HP.

Some people believe that if you buy the lowwer HP engine it will last longer since it is not put through as much, but for the most part, these engines are pretty stout.

One thing I like about the 5000 series and up is the engines are wet sleeved with liners, wish that was the case for the 4000 series. At least the 4000 series is where Deere starts using the inboard planetary rear axle.
