Anyone here raise them?

I知 thinking about starting a small herd and was curious what others have experienced.

Following as I have thought about doing the same.

My wife has a friend with Dexter's. She raves about them. We may consider a few in a couple years when the house is finished and I have time to fence some acreage.

Huh - never heard of this type or breed. Mainly Hereford or Angus in this neck of the woods.

niche breed and if you have a niche market you might do ok. If you plan to sell offspring thru the barns you will loose your AZZ

If you want my honest opinion , Look at straight angus you can select them to be on the lower end of the frame scale and have an animal that markets well.

They have appeal to new generation of homesteaders due to more manageable size and slightly reduced acreage needed. My wife's friend does well selling both meat and calves.

The appeal to us is we won't eat a whole full-size cow within a reasonable time frame. So we like the smaller harvest.

But yes, it is niche.

They are expensive to buy (initial start up cost) but Ive heard that they sell for a pretty good( price when finished. Friend of mine raises some and says they finish at 800 pounds or less. Because of this they appeal to the smaller families since theres not so much meat to store.

Anyone do dairy with one?

And subscribed for interest.

Never saw them in a dairy situation.

One of the lessons of successful people is to look at other successful people and do what they did. Of course there are innovators and those who blaze their own trail etc. but for the most part, if you don't see a bunch of people doing "it" in your area there is probably a reason. Yes Dexter's are a bit smaller and easier to handle but they also dress out proportionately less. You spend the same amount of time on them as you do an Angus. Its sort of the false economy of narrow gauge railroading mounted on hooves. Now I do have a number of neighbors who have succeeded with Simmental cattle, which might offer a similar option for you to consider.
