Hello all, I ran my 5220 out of fuel and now after bleeding the air out of the system it will not fire up. I pulled an injection line and there is very little pressure coming from the injection pump. Could I have damaged the injection pump by running it out? The thing has been hard to start for a few years now but it did start Everytime with a little cranking.

While trying to diagnose the issue I found one of the injection line fittings coming off of the pump to be very loose, actually very surprised there wasn't fuel coming out of it... Could this be an issue? Cause of failure?

All air is removed from the system. I grasp the importance of this and am getting just fuel, no air to the pump. From the pump forward I get very little pressure. I do not have a pressure gauge but with a line off there is no fountain, squirt or, for lack of better words, impressive amount of fuel pressure coming from the injection pump.

Any help or meaningful advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have an owner's manual? The bleeding instructions should be in there.
Generally, first you bleed the fuel filter(s), then the pump, then the injectors. Do you have a lift pump in the fuel delivery circuit? If you do, is it working? Make sure your battery is well charged before you bleed the injectors. When is the last time you changed the fuel filter? Is your air filter clean. It takes fuel and air to make a fire in the cylinder.

No owners manual, As per my post all air is out of the system. I'm getting all fuel, no air to the pump, when I crack the injection lines I get all fuel ( what little there is ) no air to the injectors. To get at the injection lines one needs to take off the intake hose so it's getting all the clean fresh air it could want.

I've never seen an injection pump put out such a miniscule amount of fuel and pressure but this is also the first MS142 I've worked on.

This is a all mechanical fuel system, so no lift pump.

Thanks for your advice.

The only time you'll get much pressure from your pump is when there is back pressure against it. You can check pressure with a gauge. It's a low volume high pressure pump.

Thank you, I've searched the net for what pressure this pump is supposed to be creating but have come up with nothing. Buying a service manual is inevitable but by chance does anyone know what that should be?

Thank you for your reply

Re-torque the loose dv holder on the pump to 30 -35 ftlbs..check them all..
R u POSITIVE about the supply pump.?? Loosen the inlet banjo bolt at the pump inlet and crank the engine..
If it shoots out, u have a lift/supply pump..

I did check the other DV holders, everything is tight. I can see the fuel line running from the tank to the filter to the pump, I can see into the fuel tank so unless the lift pump is a quantum, micro, wireless inline retrofit done without my knowledge in the last 25 years it does not have a lift pump.o_O

Thanks for the advice! I'll be back at it today.
