Can someone tell me what these two valves do and the difference between these two valves? People are suggesting I get two of these for the back end when I order the L3200. I don't know enough about tractors other than I think they are where you plug in implements on the back end so you don't have to get out of your seat to adjust chains, etc. for implements using the PTO.

The price is what Kubota has on their site:

1 DETENT VALVE (NON-SELF-CANCELING) - $273.00
OR
1 FLOAT DETENT VALVE - $319.00

Thanks!

1 DETENT VALVE (NON-SELF-CANCELING) - $273.00 This valve is commonly used where you want a constant flow, the detent holds the valve in the open position.
OR
1 FLOAT DETENT VALVE - $319.00 This valve when in detent mode allows the fluid to flow back and forth in the hydraulic cylinder which allows the cylinder to freely move as needed for use with certain implements for certain applications.

Brian,
I'm trying to learn about hydraulic valves too. Could you please give common examples of where these types of valves might be used and what they'd do in these applications?

DETENT VALVE (NON-SELF-CANCELING) used to feed a backhoe set of valves. A log splitter. Really anything that requires a constant hydraulic flow.

FLOAT DETENT VALVE. This valve when in the float position is great to allow a hydraulic top to move in & out freely when using a mower. Sometimes either the mower does not have a swivel to allow any up and down movement or if you have really rough terrain and the swivel is not enough to allow the mower to move up and down enough. I have had customers that used this function to be able to back the mower down next to their ponds edge on a short steep bank. I personally use it with my hydraulic side link when I am finish grading my roads and at the intersections the camber changes as I go around the corner. I want my implement to follow the road surface, not the tractor. piston. one of the TBN members uses his float function all the time. One of his uses is to have his landscape rake just follow the ground surface to clean things up. With the side link in float mode, the rake just stays with the ground and you don't end up with high and low spots that are so common with 3pt grading implements. Now this does not work if you were just in a bunch of sand or the like. The hydraulic would just let the implement dig in more on that side. But on a more dense surface, it is a great function to be able to have and use.

I hope that some of this helps. ;)

Brian,
That helped a great deal. Thank you.

Brian, that was very helpful. I was wondering though, when you said "in the float position." Does that mean you can convert the floating detent valve to a "regular" detent valve? In ordering my L3200, should I get one of each or two floaters?

I personally would get both float detent valves, but then I don't use anything that takes a continuous flow and I would have a "TnT" set for sure. If you use a log splitter, you could bungee the lever open. It really depends on what your uses will be. Are you getting top & tilt cylinders? If so, go with the 2 float valves. ;)

Never been a fan of the bungee cord and detented valves. If your system pressure is off and on high enough to cancel the detent, then holding it open forces pressurized oil through the detent release passages and builds heat. Similar to oil passing through a relief valve. If you must use a detented valve in this way, I suggest you try to adjust the detent cancel pressure up beyond what the load requires. It might make the lever a bit stiffer to engage and disengage, but still better in the long run.
