somewhat recently i purchased a deere 1050 with a bit over 2000 hrs on it, motor was rebuilt by a well regarded mechanic around here, she runs great but has a few maintenance items i have to replace like the brakes, clutch in a couple years, and the front axles bearings.

my concern and questions surround that front axle i have done all the digging i can but theres simply nothing and no one with first hand knowledge. the stub shafts after you take the front wheels off have roughly 1/8" of play overall which i take as wheel bearing need replacing, but the "knuckle seal joint" area has about a 1/16" of play from side to side is this play within spec? should include the previous owner replaced the seal there, but its clear he did his best but doesnt have much experience. i may be wrong but i think there could be a missing wear sleeve or collar, is there one on an 88' model?

and better off safe that sorry i do intent of replacing the "wheel bearings" and new seals in those front lower gear cases. Is there supposed to be play between the stub shafts and the surrounding lower gear case? or is it similar to my sierra as a good and new set of bearings are rock solid tight?

i know this is 99 questions, but to help with very small engine oil weeps can i add a quality stop leak like lucas? and a piston on the backhoe boom is weeping and a quick connect, can i add the blue devil hydraulic oil stop leak and be safe?

and help, and input would be very much appreciated guys. :drink:

The 1050 and the 336 are not identical but they do share most of the same front axle parts and a few other parts. The front axle should not have nearly that much (if any) play. All of those gears need to mesh correctly and consistently and that is not possible with that much movement. There is a good writeup on replacing those seals below which also shows the gears & bearings

thats is the exact clarification i needed hoyetractor!! i really appreciate it. there is nothing quite like getting the exact help you really need to bump you into the direction when youre really not sure :cool2:

that link is how i plan on tearing into it, and my parts will be coming from you. i was actually watching a clutch replacement video for yanmars yesterday with my father that Hoye has, much smaller tractor but a good guide and proof of concept.

i really appreciate everyone taking their own time and answering thank you very much

i will be replacing the hydraulic piston seals maybe next year if i can safely get by, anyone try the "blue devil hydraulic seal sealant"? it sounds like the ticket i am looking for to simply buy time, but if it hardens like super glue when cold or some other huge issue then i have to bite that bullet aswell

I'm happy to help and we appreciate the business.

I, personally, haven't ever used that sealant but I know a lot of people have had good luck with similar stuff if the leaks are caused by dry seals. It probably won't fix the leak at the quick connect but some new orings or some teflon thread sealant (depending on where it is leaking) should.

aaron from hoye, i really hope you get this message sooner rather than later as i need your help enormously again sir

i am 45minutes into ordering my dam parts for the tracotr (i dont have any manuals or schematics yet and im more of a hands on wrencher but still have enough patience for this stuff)

my deere is a 1988 1050 4wd as im sure you already know, and i am honored to have to answer my post yourself and you are the missing link in my dilemma here. what are the part numbers i need to completely rebuilt that lower spindle housing? i read that great write up from the guy in Pennsylvania but lack the necessary part #'s

cant figure out the sleeve there, then the brass ring on the inside of that lower housing?

also i need to replace the "wheel bearings" as that stub shaft has a pathetic amount of play (about an 1/8th slightly more)

i know i am throwing a load on you man, but i really do need your experience and your first hand know how

what are the bearings, seals, and/or bushings i will need to pick up to eliminate this slop for the years to come in that i genuinely am relying heavily on this tractor for

any help from you like this is a massive amount of good karma ( and a bit of business) i know youre a good man from helping me before here, and the only one i know who i can trust in this instance

thank you for any help at all man

Aaron is real good about responding to 'Contact Us' on his website. It may be random luck whether he reads this post timely.

Sorry for the delay. I was out of town this weekend. I'm happy to help but I'm sure there are lots of other trustworthy folks on here too. :)

It sounds like you have the 'new style' axle with the wear collars & sleeve? Is that correct?

Aaron i apologize for being a pain in the ***** :drink:

but hot **** the help is what i was hoping for haha i did see that on your main site there to be honest, i just wasnt 100% positive if things crossed over or if they were completely unique.
so the "wheel bearing are the same if it is the old style or new style?

and just so i know on the other front good sir, if i was to order parts that turn out unnecessary and obviously do not open them and keep them clean can i return them?

another huge thank you, with a huge reassurance for me and any one to view this post in the coming years you are the correct person/to get the parts for these tractors. they may be "most reliable" Deere ever had, but whether you like it or not you still have to take care of them and replace the parts that need replacing, making the relationship between us the community and you (the man for parts)

edit. also are there any notorious parts that like to wing off to never find it again land like a snap ring i will have to remove/replace when replacing the wheel bearings that youre aware of?
