i looked at the spindle you guys sell, i read your notes at the bottom about the front loader basically destroying the early ones so yanmar upgraded them twice. assuming mine being an 88' mine would be the upgraded-upgrade one? still not massive overkill as the rest of the tractor is, yet just good enough to be good?

I'm happy to help in any way I can. I'm not sure what version you would have but you should be fine as long as you take it easy with the loader work. Just keep it in the back of your mind that those front axles are not indestructible and bouncing around with a full bucket can cause problems.
I have a Yanmar 336D tractor, similar to the JD 950. "Similar" to the 1050 but no turbo charger. The front axles on mine broke. I replaced them with the heaviest Yanmar later edition units. I have had no problems since but I do not know if such units are available any more. I got mine perhaps 10 years ago.

Hoye has Heavy duty axles that they custom Make for some of these models.

Our axles are really only for the smaller 2wd models (YM1500, 1700, 2000). I don't think you would see any advantage on the bigger models like the 336.
Yanmar did 3 upgrades to that 4wd spindle over the years. If I remember right the last upgrade was sold as a heavy duty kit that included a new spindle, gear, and cover plate.

My parts manual for a JD 850/950/1050 shows the frames and axles and stuff to be swapable. Just that the engine for the 850 is a 3T80 and the 950/1050 is the 3T90 engine. The 1050 gets the turbo.
The JD1050 in the Yanmar is the rare YM4300. There are several here in the USA and Canada, but much more popular in Australia.
If you know how to poke around the John Deere service parts site, you can find all of the explode view part drawings with part numbers.
