Deck clearance for hay wagon?

Just got my first running gear for sap gathering (a 6x10) and am building a deck - 2x6s on 4x8 stringers. I want the deck as close to the ground as possible so I want to minimize the clearance between the top of the wheel and the deck. How small can I go? I was hoping to get away with no more than 2 inches.

Need some more info. Sap gathering involves a tank/drums on the trailer I presume. Depends on what trailer you have 4 wheel with front turning or two wheel?

For all practical purposes you can build inside the wheels and make arches around the wheels putting it closer to the ground.

But in general there is no reason you would need more than 2" clearance - maybe a picture of your wagon, rig and sap tanks you plan on using would give us a better idea and prompt more replies/solutions.

we build our wagons with about 2" clearance, there is no suspension so it seams to work well, never had a problem yet. I have had trouble with bigger tires, I usually buy old truck tires whatever the tire shop has on hand and if they are too big they cause trouble on 1 of my wagons.

I'd give it an inch - you can always put a block between the running gear and stringers if you someday get bigger tires.
