Dealer questions

Hi everyone,

I've read through many of the threads here but am wondering if anyone could provide their top 2,3,4 questions to ask a dealer when I'm starting my search for a subCUT, CUT. I have 7 acres, 5 of it pasture and will be looking at some substantial gardening/small livestock projects. I also will be re-working the driveways and moving some soil to level a few areas.

I'm new to the tractor buying process so any questions to ask a dealer would be appreciated.

Well,do your home work first,go to several dealers to just look and set on[no questions really needed than],and do more home work on the 2-3 you have kinda settled on.

Than when you go to the dealer to buy,won't be many questions,but a couple would be,is this the best price you can give me? Do you deliver for free,and can you come pick it up or work on it at my house,how much?
Will you load the tires[and with what],and at what cost?

Think thats about all the questions I had,course I paid cash,if you was financing,that will be a whole nother story.

Have you figured out what price range/hp/gear verses hst trans.What make,do you need 4wd? What are you going to be using it for mainly.[people here just love those kinds of questions you know!]

How long in business? How many new/used tractors sold per month/year?

Let's see your service center and parts department. Take note of the number of mechanics, number of bays, type of service equipment. Does it look like a professional service shop?

How much do you charge to pick up and deliver my tractor for service/repair?

I'd rather do all the research ahead of time so that I already know the answers. My goal is that the only question for the dealer is "how much"?

Also rather than asking the dealer questions, I would try to find some people who have dealt with that dealer and ask them how they felt about it. Did they feel they got a fair deal? How were they treated both before and after the sale? Did the sales/service/parts people sound like they knew what they were talking about?

I still don't know how you go about finding other customers to ask though. Do you catch them as they're coming out the door or what? I wouldn't trust customers referred to me by the dealer.

just remember these guys want to eat too. try to do you're research here and elsewhere first. find dealers and ask questions here about them and filter through the responses. some of these dealers want to sell a unit so bad they will tell you anything to sell one. drive it, ask them to hook a pto driven implement to it and run it. try all the ranges, all the gears.

OK great - thanks guys! I will do a bunch more research and try to go armed to the dealer. I think I would almost prefer to buy a second hand tractor but it seems like some of the dealers (JD, Bobcat etc) have such good financing (0% for 4,5 yrs) that I would prefer to keep my money and use theirs at no cost. I'll keep you posted!
