D170 mower PTO

I have a JD D170 mower and when I engage the PTO to activate the mower the engine just cuts out like the key was shut off.

Any help would be appreciated.

What is the condition of the seat switch?

Not only do you need to check the seat switch, but also the reverse sensing switch on the pedals. A defective seat switch would also kill the engine anytime you released the parking brake, but the reverse sensing switch only is supposed to work in reverse. A quick way of checking is to hold down the ROI switch while you engage the PTO. If the engine keeps running, then it's definitely a defective or loose reverse sensing switch.
