You really have to work out the gearing for your particular tractor and terrain. When I had a tractor with a standard transmission I'd set the tractor engine speed where I wanted it to run and set the gearing that worked. Sometimes the ride was kind of rough. My new tractor is an HST and it's really cool. I can set the engine at PTO rpm, put the transmission into the middle gear and vary my speed with the forward pedal. I can back off for rough areas and never change PTO speed.

I go as fast as I can without bogging, getting bounced out of the seat, or missing grass. At the moment I can be in high range turtle in the HST tractor, but after rain it can get down to low range turtle. Some of the rougher country is low turtle all the time.

Geared tractor is low range second so far. But I haven't done much mowing with it yet and it was on the side of a hill.
