I have an old cultivator that I found at my father in law's shed several years after he died. I wonder if it would be a good addtion to my attachments selection. I was thinking about welding a two inch piece of steel on it to go into the 2 inch receiver. What are your thoughts on this?
Is it really a cultivator?
Should I weld it to a quick attach plate instead?
Is it too big for the power trac? I probably should have put a reference ruler in the picture. It is about 24 inches wide and 44 inches long.

Why are the blades on one side wider than the other? Should I have try the same number wide on one side as the other?
Any other suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Bob,

It appears to be a sleeve-hitch cultivator for a garden tractor, likely made by either Brinly-Hardy or AgriFab.

That one appears to be set up "off-balance" so that it could build hills or mounds. Everything is adjustable, if you can loosen all those rusty bolts. How would you forsee using it?

Not sure how useful it would be mounted on the front of a PT -- unless you're a WHOLE LOT better at backing up in a straight line than I am... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I plan to back up. I would use it to cultivate my small garden (50 X 50 feet). I don't have any experience in this. I have the PT potato plow. Would it do the same thing?

I could adjust it to balance as much as possible. With 3 on each side it would not be perfect.

Bob,

Those were intended for a totally different purpose than the "potato digger." They're intended to precisely straddle rows of small crops and plow up the weeds, while loosening the soil and "hoeing" the plant at the same time. It requires precision -- that's why I was questioning backing up using it.

This pic of a Simplicity cultivator in use might help:

Kent, that's the kind of info that I am looking for. Mine has disc on each size, does that make a difference? I don't see that on the Simplicity.

So if I backed up I might run over the plants. If I turned it around and aimed it forward would that work? I can see than it might dig in.

What if I put it on the back of the PT? Then I could not lift it unless I can a cable over the ROPs with some pulleys.

Thanks for the info, this is not getting simple.

Bob,

I think those disks were for "hilling" -- pullling extra dirt around the plant. Just guessing -- but they may have been used to cover peanuts blossoms, for example, or to add dirt around irish potatoes.

They had different kinds of "shoes, sweeps and disks" to put on them, based on what you were doing.

Cultivator Sweeps on eBay, for example

I think the only option would be to reverse it, and push it -- then you'd have to watch closely while using it, and the articulated rear wheels of the PT still might run over the row of plants.

Personally, I don't think it's a good fit for a PT...

Thanks Kent. I guess I will put it aside. Maybe I can strip parts off and use then for something. How about putting it in the front yard and using it as a yard decoration.

You could use one of the disc for a driveway edger.

I actually need an edger. Thanks for the idea.
