National Geographic just had a short article on the eastern coyote "coy-wolf" phenomenon. These are what we saw explode back in Michigan.
As a kid in the 60s, coyotes were unheard of except in the upper peninsula. Now the whole state is crawling with them. The wolf gene, and natural selection favoring larger, longer-legged animals that can hunt in winter, create a super 'yote who is surrounded by abundant large game (deer).
Out here in CA I am surrounded by coyotes, but they are sneaky, mangy little things and nothing like the ones hunting deer back east. There is certainly no shortage of them, lest anyone worry.
