Since we are on a septic tank I do not have bleach on hand and I had not been able to find it in the store, shelves were bare, every time. Wife was in a panic without bleach given the situation.

Memory chip floated up and I recalled setting some detergents aside after clearing out a rental...... bingo. Two gallons of bleach in the garage.

Why on earth would you put bleach in a septic tank?

Exactly. That's what I explained to my wife. "Ohhhh."

She should know better, she's a retired budget analyst who used Excel spreadsheets ever since Excel was invented. Somehow none of that familiarity with computers transferred over to Internet use.

Sir,
Ask one of your neighbors to pick up essential items. Leave money on your porch and they can leave the irems on the porch

I am committed to helping one of my neighbors in that way. He has COPD, amongst other issues.

Rural people are the best

Be safe!

Thank you for the suggestion. Lived by our neighbor for 20 years. We both believe that good fences make good neighbors. We have a waving relationship but are not friends. I plan to get essentials (aka food) from Krogers using their parking lot pick up service. Not 100% safe but safer than entering the store with other customers and high risk cashiers.

I kind of enjoy some messing with the spam calls. When I'm in the mood it's a source of entertainment. The goal is to confuse them. Whatever pops into my head at the moment. Often times I pick up the phone and don't say anything. If the line gets disconnected, I guess it's a computer and took a call before me.

Sometimes I just start off with, "What ever you're selling I'll take a dozen. When can you get them here? What color will they be? Can you overnight them? The last shipment was busted when I open the box. They quickly hang up.

One of my favorites is to say. "Hello ....(city of choice) police dept. Homicide--sergeant Hall speaking. You have a homicide to report? Is this an emergency? Do I need to call 911 for you? Is someone bleeding? Did you shoot them? I just keep asking questions, speaking in a firm, fast tone. They just hang up.

I've messed with the folks going to fix my student loan so bad one guy called me a M-Fer and hung up!

Don't forget that many call centers use what is called a predictive dialer. This is a computer controlled dialer that dials from a list and listens for you to say hello. if it hits a fax or modem tone it hangs up. But if it can decode your "hello" and probably a lot of other words, it quickly transfers your call into the call center ACD (Automatic Call Distributor) queue This will be answered by a real human who will start the spiel for whatever they are selling. This is far more productive than having the humans dialing the numbers. Not just from the dialing time but the ability to weed out the no answers, the modem tones the busy tones AND it also monitors the status of the agents in the ACD queue and does calculations on the average time of call handling, and "just in time" it dials the numbers just ahead of the load of the agents. It is really quite a marvel, and I am sorry to say, I hooked up a lot of them and put them in service. All in the distant past of course, but I guess I am partly to blame....:(

Your assessment isn't optimistic but I agree with it. The worst is yet to come. How "worst" transpires depends on counter measures we perform.

You can figure another 10 days or so before it becomes readily apparent just how bad it really is (we're roughly two weeks behind Italy)

It's already starting to happen ... ran across this picture earlier today of a line that had formed waiting to get into an ER in NYC:

It sounds as though you are being very prudent (in light of you and your spouses health conditions) by isolating ... continue to do that and limit contact with others as much as you can.

?? We do not, that is why we do not have it on hand.

I found the gallons of bleach in the corner of the garage set there after a rental cleanup (that was not on a septic).

The March US new case curve towers above all other countries, although very hard to interpret due to recent big surge in tests after 2 months of no testing (see today's @COVID19Tracking graph at right)

Way long back ago when I was a youngin' with a new mortgage and desperate to have a job ... any job to pay the bills, I took a spot in a boiler room hawking some kind of fake charity (that I didn't know was fake at the time). They handed us a page out of a telephone book and we sat at a touch tone phone and manually dialed each number, progressing down the page.

Interesting trend the US has going. How long will they keep it up? We will see what happens when spring break is over.

We never had caller ID on our home phone until recently. All those years, I always let it go to the answering machine. Anyone that knew us would leave a message, we'd hear who was talking, and pick it up if we knew them. . We had a lot of hang ups that would never leave a message. Decades of this procedure. Just recently my sister-in-law commented that we never answer the phone. I told her we screen all of our calls. She said she figured if we didn't answer, we weren't home, so as soon as she heard the answering machine message, she'd hang up! 20 years she never knew we screened our calls.

Dealing with scammer calls is a complex subject. Many variables involved. We have a Panasonic wireless system. It has the capability to ring up to 7 times before going to answering machine. Each time it rings the Caller ID is announced. That gives us time to listen to determine if it's a whitelist (friends/family/doctor/etc) caller or a scammer. If whitelist we answer but all scammers go to answering machine. 99% of all scammers never leave a message. They want a human to answer so our phone number can be sold to other scammers. Rule #1 when dealing with scammers is to NEVER have a human answer the phone.

Can you quit with the charts and graphs?

They don't mean a bloomin' thing.
I actually find the charts very helpful. They portray a LOT of information if you know what to look for.

So many variables that will effect the ultimate outcome ...

Resumption of large gatherings, cruise ship services, returning substantial portions of the population to work too early, etc.

The chart assumes each county has the same area and population.
