Visited an old abandoned mining camp in Nevada's Clan Alpine mountains yesterday. Among the neat artifacts laying around (location is very remote and extremely difficult to get to) was this old ring gear someone had place on this cedar tree way back when. The tree has grown around the ring gear so only a portion of it is still visible. And a closeup shows why the ring gear was discarded - a section of the teeth is eaten away.
No wonder why people don't want to cut down below about 6 feet on anything around a house.

No wonder why people don't want to cut down below about 6 feet on anything around a house.
A few years back a friend asked me to cut down a large ash tree that had died.
Easy enough, nothing near by and fresh enough not to be a widow maker yet. I'm single anyways so I should have been good.;)
I put a new chain on the saw prepping it for a days firewood cutting.
That chain lasted less than 30 seconds.
Someone had driven dozens of nails into the trunk all the way around. Should really have called them spikes.
He had wanted me to cut it aboot 3 feet off the ground so his wife could put a large flower pot on top.
I ended up clearing back the soil at ground level to cut it down and had to sacrifice the first 8+ feet to the burn pile. It was so riddled with nails.
There was the obvious remains of a clothesline around 12' but I cut around that.
You need a metal detector to cut many of those trees.
I never spent so much time sharpening chains as that day. And by the end I had to throw them out. Too many teeth were damaged beyond reasonable wear.
He saved $3500 on the tree service.
Cost me $90 for 2 chains, fuel, use of my log splitter, wear and tear and 3 days work for 4 cords of wood worth $350 around here.
And he expected me to take and burn all the brush etc.
He still mentions how well I did on that deal.
I don't care who it is next time and there will be a next time, "you have the equipment" they can call a service and see how much it really costs.

The moon here.

I can never see a full moon without thinking about my Grandad. He grew up in the Victorian era where everything was prim and proper. He said as a teenager he was walking his girlfriend through the town park one full moon night holding hands when his nose started to run. He didn't want to use his handkerchief so he simply pointed up as he stealthfully wiped his nose on his jacket sleeve saying "see the Moon Sally Ann?".

Been seeing this black coyote for a few weeks on camera and in person. Hoping to get up to my property and shoot both these yotes.
The black one chased a doe around for 30 ish mins about 2 weeks go. I couldn't get a shot at it. BUT the other blonde one with it is laying about 8 feet behind the camera that took the shot here.

Wife and I were walking through a forest (I can't recall where) and there were about a dozen of them flying around, stopping to drum, etc... They are quite large and seemed to fly along in a rolling motion VS straight line.
