I'll be in the market for a control valve for my log splitter project. I've noticed that control valves come rated in different GPM ratings. The pump I will be using is rated at 28GPM, powered by 16hp. Do i buy a control valve that is rated the same as the pump? Not really knowledgeable about this. Can someone offer some advice?

Yes, your valve should be rated the same or very close to the GPM of the pump-you could get away with a 25GPM rated valve. You also need to size the hoses, filter and reservoir properly also.

I assume it is a two-stage pump you are using?

If you buy a valve get one that locks in on the return stroke so you can do other things when the cylinder is returning.
