58 851 ford
1st time posting here. Been using this site for years. I have a 58 851 that I found in a field
Been sitting a few years. I got it running pretty quick and bring it home . I ran it around a out a week to check it out. It ran fine, I put it in the garage overnight. The next day I could not get it in gear. Thinking might be sticking clutch. I was going to replace it anyway, so I replaced it. Still will not go in gear? Remove top of trany and find nothing wrong. Drain fluid. Clean and no debris. What am I missing ? I've been working on ford tractors for many years and have 6 now. Never had a problem I couldn't figure out , till now. Anything I am over looking on this. Thanks ahead of time.

Can you hear and feel gears grinding as you try to get it into gear?

Can the transmission be shifted in and out of some gears when the engine isn't running?

Need to separate clutch issues with shifter and gear box mechanicals.

If you follow along here regularly, you should know that details are the difference between helpful information and worthless drivel. The phrase "won't go into gear" is about as vague as "it won't start". Give us a few hints about what you're experiencing.

I guess I should have said it don't come outa gear.. clutch don't have any effect. With the trany. Out of gear I neutral, I can not push it. With the clutch clamped down it won't move. Still in gear? Something in rear end seems locked up. Can't understand how it could break down parked in garage overnight. Never ever heard any kinda noise from it?

Trany can be shifted on to all gears smoothly when not running. Grinding when running?

Sorry about not clear how I explain things, 75 years old and don't think as clear as I used to. Thanks for the replies.

It is NOT the transmission, it's the clutch or something in the clutch system. I just repaired one that the release bearing was froze up and it wore the figures out on of the pressure plate.

That's not a clutch issue, and probably not a transmission problem either. I think it's farther back. If you try rolling it, how much will the tires move in either direction before it locks up? If it was brakes or axle issue the tires wouldn't move at all. A problem in the transmission/pinion shaft area and it would roll enough to take up the slack in the gears that aren't involved. You could jack the rear wheels off the ground and try turning one. That might tell you something. Axles should turn in opposite directions freely if the axles and differential are free.

No Reverse on my 2000 after a new 2 stage clutch. It was the shifter I believe which all 4 forwards worked. They had to weld something. Shifter fork Etc. is my guess.
