How come when I either download a file that was sent to me via email OR when I transfer a file using a USB jump drive the file gets renamed?

EX - original file name "Jims Transportation 1.zip"

downloads as "a%20Jim%20Transportation%201.zip"

Any ideas?

I think it has to do with the way your hard drive was initially built (formatted)
It does not understand l o n g file names.

What O/S?

Do you know what file system your running?

What OS are you using? What file format (NTFS, FAT, FAT32). Also, are you using any kind of file download manager? I once ran across a d/l manager (don't remember the vendor) that gave some funky names to files w/ spaces and special characters in them.

Sorry I forgot to post the OS - downloaded to a Mac Powerbook (OS X) - But I have also noticed it when I was either moving files between the Mac and my work windows (XP) machine, I dont remember which way it changes the files names..

I have run into this on a very few occasions when I try to copy and paste website URL's. I think the "20%" is the code for a space and might be HTML code. I have no idea why it's doing it when you download or transfer a file however. Might have to look in some of the advanced properties of the files and see if it has HTML highlighted somewhere that is making it do this. Ain't computers just great.

Some program in the chain cannot handle 'spaces' in the filename. "%20" is an encoded space. This is kind of strange in the case of the USB file, dont' you just get an Explorer view and drag/drop? In the case of downloading it makes a little more sense, but I'd need more info to know how to solve the problem.
