Compost Tumbler

Equipped with the original plastic lid they would probably work pretty good

They really do. I often move them to the non-airconditioned mudroom where things tend to spoil and I don't notice the odor,,,,,,,,,,,,,until I remove lid to dump contents.:sneeze::ill::melodramatic:

"they make a nice little sink-side container you can dump your kitchen waste into"

Frugal old farts like me call them two pound coffee cans.:D

Trust me, the ones with the charcoal filters are soooo much better. No smell at all, even after several days.

I am sure they are, I had one at one time but was not composting. Danged if I can find it now.

Mom had one with a big molded in ring gear on the end outfitted with a hand crank that had a small pinion gear on it. She had it for several years and tried and tried to get it to make decent compost...never could. The stuff dried out so fast and it required a lot of attention.

She asked my father in law who has 10 green thumbs if he wanted it for free to which he gladly accepted the offer. He had it for several years and couldn't get it to make any decent compost. Sold it to some dreamer at a garage sale a couple years back. Now he has a pile out in the open in a 3 sided fenced in area that he turns with his Worksaver manure forks on the JD 3038e and has the most wonderful compost of all.

My advice: Compost tumblers are an expensive gadget for the "Pampered Chef" gardener and will soon end up in your garage sale pile....don't waste your money.

The one we have is ComposTumbler. We have it in the sun, seems to help, and used a little compost starter. YMMV

Right now, I just use a pile, and never turn it. I used to use bins made from pallets, but the bottom pallet half rotted away and the remaining chunks of nail-covered wood would catch on whatever implement I tried to use until I finally tore it all apart in frustration.

I wouldn't be opposed to some sort of bin setup again, more of the compost seemed to be usable and it was easier keeping out weeds...maybe one of these days I'll get some IBC totes, cut one side off, and try again.
