Jeff, how many of those 1.25 billion people do you believe can afford or need a tractor??

1.25 Billion X 68% = 850 million India's rural population.

Whatever the "real" number, it is huge.

Total USA population is 319 million. Maybe 3.2 million USA farmers?

(I read the other day that if you subtract the wealth controlled by the Putin subservient Oligarchs in Russia, that the average Russian has a standard of living equal to the average Indian.)

1.25 billion / 1,000 = 1,250,000 x 2.38 =2,975,999 tractors in 2003.

Maybe 5,500,000 tractors in 2016?

Note that according to Google, India's population was 1.094 billion in 2003 and is currently (January 2016) 1.295 billion.

I haven't worked with the NationMaster/World Resource Institute data source and so I can't speak to its reliability. According to Countries Compared by Agriculture > Tractors. International Statistics at NationMaster.com, there were 1.52 million tractors in India in 2000 (compared to 4.8 million in the US).

According to http://www.agrievolution.com/PDF/2014-Agrievolution-Tractor-Market-Report.pdf, 592,942 new tractors were sold in India in 2014, amounting to over 25% of worldwide tractor sales in that year. Adding up the reported sales in India from 2010 to 2014 gives 2.875 million units. I don't have a clue as to Mahindra's market share in India.

I'd guess 90% makes no sense to import when you make a cheap product local... The areas near the border might see a larger percentage of imports.... And coastlines. But I expect that my number is way high. There Has to be several local brands that are made and never exported.

Steve's stale data from 2003 suggests 11.9 people of every 5,000 own a tractor in India, twelve times your guesstimate.
