Greeyings Jenkinsph,

An interesting post. Obviously your weight number for the x728 show s quite a difference from what my neighbor had expressed and I'm sure you would have the correct number . . so I'm wrong. But then I'm confused as well because the x728 has a very noticeable ground rumble to it that even mine doesn't have. Its not the sound . . Its the ground shudder that typically is a solid heavy equipment piece moving. Also its surprising to be just under 1000 pounds when I see how big and heavy built it is.

Yet if his is 980 plus 250 for ride on deck and mine is 1433 plus 235 for deck plus another 150 for loaded rears . . I would think there would be a big difference of imprint or indication in our lawns . . . but there isn't.

Is your x749 with 4 wheel steer approximately the same size and weight as the x728?

The x728 is 955 lbs. and a 62" deck is 200lbs. but I don't have a weight number on the 60" drive over deck. I would be surprised if the x728 with the 60" drive over deck weighs more than 1200 lbs, I would expect it to be closer to 1170 lbs. I used tractor data and x7xx series brochure for weight information.

The x749 is 4x4 and 4 wheel steer and is diesel, so more weight at 1205 lbs. I have the 48" deck on it which weighs an additional 117 lbs. Add for the 3 pt hitch and I am somewhere around 1360 lbs. I choose the 48" deck to allow me to fit between the trees and small gates on my jobs.

The x758 is equipped with a 54" deck and does not have extras like the x749, I use it for mowing support in the summer time. The x758 was purchased to help out a friend in trouble, if he gets things straightened out this year he may buy it back. I don't really need it as much as he does. For now I am limiting its use through this coming year.

Wouldn't you stop and look at a garden tractor or SCUT/CUT with a Cat diesel in it?

I would look at it out of curiosity for sure. I have noticed that Cat is now using other brand engines in some of their small machines. When the small mini excavators first came out they had Cat diesel engines, now their are other models likely to meet emissions if I were to guess.

You bet, like a little Perkins rebadged as a Cat?
Caterpillar | Perkins
Cat | Industrial | Caterpillar

I was thinking a C3 Acert in an M or 5 series size tractor...

And I wonder why Allison or some other trans mfg can't make a hydro that can take more than 60hp.
why can't I have a 80hp tractor with a treadle?

Cat is the parent company of Perkins.

Oddly, CAT is even shying away from the little Perkins lately. They are using Kubota in the skid loaders and small excavators. Painted yellow of course.

Just curious. Any thoughts on why? Emissions? Reliability?

I've heard that to set up an engine mfg. facility is very expensive so perhaps they are using 3rd party engines on machines that wouldn't generate enough volume or profit to set up an engine line for the size they need. They certainly couldn't go wrong with Kubota engines.

And Mitsubishi, and International for their on-road engines, and soon Cummins painted yellow for on road.
