JD fanatics/enthuatists, I have a question. The green of JD tractor is different than the green of JD implements, isn't it? I think I am a colorblind a little because I can't see the minor differences between the colors. If there is difference, I need RAL code of JD implement green (also ral# of JD tractor green, to compare the colors on the net.) I am unable to find RAL# of greens of JD tractor/implements. I can (maybe) find other color codes like Dupont, etc - but my need is ral as this color tech. is mostly used here. Okay, help me and your dinner & wine bottle this evening are on me.

Why sad faces above? Don't tell us, Egon, you are a JD hater.
As to your questions; one of your citizens in Canada wanted me to send him an implement painted in JD green. I'm not a painter at JD corporate nor a JD fanatic knowing RAL# of that green. Help your citizen, Egon.

Nomad,

Maybe you should post this question in the JD forum?

Or maybe you have? I don't have enough time in the day anymore to read all the forms since I'm retired... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif so I don't know if you did or not...

Nomad,

Here's a roundabout semi-non-answer to your question.

Are you sure they are different shades? My guess is the prep and finish on the tractors is a LOT more involved than the implements. Even using the same paint, you would get a different finish over an implement that is just welded, washed and shot with paint. If you don't believe me, take a can of your favorite auto's touch up paint, a piece of iron and spray it once or twice. Then hold it up to your car to match--they won't.

The other item that might be of interest is that in the early 70s, US Mfgrs moved from lead based to non-lead based paints. At that time, at least some of them changed their shades of colors a little for price/availability of colors issues. So if you are trying to match or looking at an old implement vs a new tractor, they probably won't match based on paint makeup.

Hope this helps.

Perhaps That is just what I am doing Nomad. Hate to see him stuck with a paint job.

Nomad,

I can't give you a direct answer other than to relate my experience. Maybe it will be helpful.

I had my JD yellow mower deck sand blasted and repainted. The paint shop found JD yellow listed in their "book" and said no problem. When I picked up the mower deck I noticed right away the color was wrong. It seems that the almost orange looking color of the JD construction equipment is aslo called JD yellow. The paint supplier could not find another JD yellow listing. I was told that JD, as well as other manufacturer's, may not always share their paint color formula.

My solution: I had a can of JD yellow for agriculture and residential equipment. I went to the paint supplier and sprayed up one of their color test cards, basically a 6x6 white card with a black checkerboard pattern. You repeatedly spray light coats until you can no longer see the black checkerboard pattern in bright sunlight. The paint guy then "read" the color with a contraption and duplicated the color. The color looked great but there was a slight difference between small pieces I painted from the JD spray can and the deck. But the deck was sprayed with a urethane paint over an epoxy primer so I would expect some difference. There was also a difference between the original yellow on the piece (weathered) and the JD spray can.

The can of JD green I have says "Intended for the following equipment: agricultural, commercial and consumer equipment" So I'm not sure if the tractor green is different from the implement green. Any differences you see between tractor and implement may be due more to normal variations in paint batches, weathering, or material differences.

Hi Nomad,
you have run into the problem that has plagued man since he started painting stuff - color matching. Getting colors to match is why Henry Ford painted the Model T any color you want - as long as it's black. Color matching is one of the biggest problems that auto body repair shops have. This has gotten easier in recent years however because there are sophisticated systems out there that "read" the color of something and will duplicate that color when the paint is mixed. Auto body paint supply stores and auto body shops sometimes have this equipment and better paint stores that supply paint for house painting also have this now too. Like other posters have pointed out the same paint on different surfaces will have a slightly different color. I worked for a number of years in the auto body industry and can say that getting colors to match exactly is very hard. I would bet that John Deere does not spend any time trying to color match their implements to their tractors or vice versa. Unless you are taking the tractor on the show tractor circuit your best bet is just to find a color that matches pretty closely and leave it at that.

Thank you all for your contributions and helps. I know that color matching is one of difficult things to do. But this was so in pre-computer era. Now, anyone can match the colors using some image editors like Photoshop. For example, Photoshop will give you the green (Ral 6017 in the attachment above) as Red = 75, Green=140, Blue=45, Hue=72, Sat.=131, Light=93 and its HTML code is #4B8C2D. My problem here is not having a "good" color image showing the exact JD color and also JD implement color if this is different than JD tractor. Or, not having its RAL number (RAL is one of color technology standarts.)

Jeff, any RAL number or another color number is written on that JD green can?

When I had to do some repairs/upgrades to my Frontier tiller I needed some paint. The JD dealer told me to use the JD green. I was certain that the Frontier line (sold by JD) was a different green than the JD green. I used it figuring it'd be close enough, and darn it all, it was a perfect match.
I picked up a couple of spray cans of green and yellow from TSC awhile back, haven't used it yet, but my guess is that it'll match just fine.
BTW, if I recall correctly, there are at least 2 different JD greens. Correct me if I am wrong.

<font color="green"> there are at least 2 different JD greens. </font>

You are right! Same for the yellow! I usually find the other brands only carry the "Classic" JD colors. Only the dealers seem to stock the current colors

Here is my search result for those interested in.
RAL color coding technology (a tech. which is mostly used by powder painters) is not covering the "exact" JD color (RAL) code. The closest green colors are RAL 6001 & 6002. Now, a rake is being painted in the green + yellow. Will look better than the MF red.

Finally, finished painting. See attached - lots of greens.
What do you think? Correct JD green?
The green and yellow are really fitting the nature harmonically, aren't they.

JD as per a court decision this year, JD has a trademark on the combination of their colors. This is a result of JD vendors going to sell similar tractors and products here in the USA. That rake color scheme would be a big risk to any importer that purchased them. The entire shipment could be held at the port until the shipment were repainted. Ugh! You are freightening me!
What is "exact" color of JD green in R-G-B (Red-Green-Blue)?
It is not in RAL tech. standarts which are usually used in the powder painting. I had said above "RAL 6001/6002" were JD Greens. But these are only closest greens to JD green that has no exact RAL matching.
So, WHAT EXACT R-G-B values Deere registered? Lets say Deere registered R=25, G=100, B=50.
Then, if a dealer paints his/her implements with R=26, G=101 and B=49, there is no problem with the laws (assuming the laws are universal, logical.) Greens are owned by the nature. If Deere has a special green, then they can own their own, say, R=25, G=100 and B=50.

Funny that I had never seen one of these rakes before and just yesterday as I was driving between Georgia and Florida, I looked over to the side of the road and there was a man on a New Holland with one of those rakes, just going at it. Cool. John
