COLD

Re: REALLY COLD

Hi Pete, now that you have Icelandic Sheep you now need Icelandic ponies to round up your sheep. Boy are they nice horses. By the way Icelandic sheep taste pretty good even though I'm not a lover of lamb. Being stationed there seven years you had to try it at least once. Passed on the eyeballs though. An Icelandic treat. The wool though will make some outstanding sweaters.

Frank,
When I was a tadpole winter to me like honey to a bear /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif now that I'm getting old and gray /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif winters ice & windchill & -0 and colder are like bad relationship. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

Yep the coffee does indeed help also the woodstove to keep these old bones warm..but we are seeking a warmer county. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Warmer this morning over here -9F w/10mph breeze..brrrrr.

SNOW!!!
Got some early this morning. First time here since 1989!! Looks like about 2.5 inches.

that reminds me of my youth ... we used to go to Lakeview (when it was still a "lake") ... let's see, I believe that's part of Cooking Lake, right? ... and tie the long tobaggan behind the car and dad would drive around on the ice. Never happen nowadays ... it'd be illegal, unsafe, non-pc and all that other stuff ... but it was a great way to spend a sunday.

Here in Miudland, they have a small area in the "City Forest" where they built a small bowl in the woods ... they have a toboggan run going down one side and up the other ... and actually make snow if it's cold enough. I hear the kids really love it. But now that I'm old and grey ... I like sitting on my duff on that snow touring machine, turning up BTO on the MP3 player, and touring the quiet woods. Although I have to drive at least an hour to unload the pantera. Sigh ... back in Thorhild, I had miles and miles of miles that I could ride, starting in my back yard.

The coldest I've ever been is when my beloved wife took me to Quebec City in the middle of the winter. 40 below zero, and a wind chill that I don't even want to think about. I thought my face was going to fall off. Seriously, at one point I was convinced I was going to simply freeze solid and die. Today here near Rochester, NY, it's a balmy 10 degrees, and the wind is only about 25 mph or so. I think I'll go catch some rays. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Wingnut,

Someone up in Quebec area was telling me that they maintain hundreds and hundreds of miles of trails for snowmobilers. Sounds great.. they can take long trips like bikers do.. and stay in different towns each night if they want to. I think I'd get a snowmobile if I lived up there. Around here we are limited to running along beside the road.. seems kind of risky and maybe not too much fun? I dunno.. never had one.. CFO won't approve it! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I saw late last night on the weather channel, you folks down south were going to get a taste of this weather also.. for the next couple of days. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif..better break out those ski parkers. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Congrats Eric....now it's time to pull out those cross country skies and head out to the Banks. Will be looking forward to seeing the pics. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

.....Bob

You reach 10F today /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif..please tell me what that feels like, for its 3.2F highest so far today w/10mph breeze, and yesterday we reach 4.1F /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif

Come on January thaw!! /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

Re: REALLY COLD

Pete,

I'd like to see some pictures of your PEX installation - particularly the manifold.
Our house is over a hundred years old and has a mixture of galvanized, pvc, and copper. The newer stuff was added by a previous DIY'er, looks terrible, and doesn't make any sense.
I was going to redo everything in copper, but the PEX definitely sounds better in a "refit" job.

Re: REALLY COLD

They were showing the PEX on this old house last week. Said it was the best for remodeling because you just snaked it through the walls like Romex. No splices from the supply to the fixture. Except where you transition to copper to attach the shut off valve and supply lines.

Isn't it Quebec City that builds the "Ice Hotel" every winter?

I was there for a meeting about 7 years ago ... in February, and they were in the midst of a heat wave ... got up to about -5 or so.

All the northern states ... and most of the Canadian provinces, maintain networks of snowmobile trails. I'm sure New Yawk must .... Vermont does, New Hampshire does ... and Michigan has over 2800 miles of trails.
My CFO was the one that insisted we buy this machine ($10k Cdn) instead of buying used, rebuilding the oldie I have, or not doing anything about snowmobiles. I've had one most all the time since 1972.
Boys and their toys ......
I find that the secret to aving CFO approval is stealth ...... lots of time, the occasional article, taking her along when I shop for parts for the oldies ... and regaling her with stories of my life in the arctic ... sledding at -50 with open face helmets, etc. That way she insists on bigger, better, heated anything, etc. And then keeps saying it's too cold to go out ... whatdya do?

Re: REALLY COLD

Okay, Paul. I'll take the digital home tonight and snap some pics. Probably start a new thread for it. Will try to get them posted tomorrow.

Thomas, the way things are going, it'll be FEBUARY before we'll ever see that January thaw. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

All this below zero weather has put a dent in the ol' woodpile for sure.

BTW, all the boys stopped by for lunch again today. There's Tom, Tom, Tom, and Tom./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Yep. I found a link to it the other day.

http://www.icehotel-canada.com/

I like the city a lot.. has a nice feel to it.. can't quite say what it is, but it's comfortable (except for those winter temps!)

I didn't know that. Sounds great! The trails probably double as hiking and biking trails during the summer? Is this part of, I forget the name of it, but it's a famous hiking trail all through New England?

sledding at -50 with open face helmets...

Do you still have a face??! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Is that picture of you from before this experience? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Although, it's funny.. the one time I did use a snowmobile, I was freezing for the first 10 minutes or so, and then I got comfortably numb and spent the rest of the day racing around on it. I was just a kid, and wondered why my dad was waving his hands frantically at me as I ran over the poles the ice fisherman used. oopsey!! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif This is second only to the time I had a dirt bike, with my dad on back, and found this wonderfully smooth area to ride on.. until he told me it was a putting green and we'd better get out of there pronto!! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Did I mention that I have an I.Q. that's almost high enough to be measured? /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif
