Try using WD40, CRC 556, etc. instead. Volatile enough to enhance the combustion process and adds lubricant.

Absolutely. Figuring out where to get the heat from can be problematic though. I just am NOT a believer in ether as a starting aid. I'm not a big believer in starting a charcoal fire under the engine or fuel tank either, but we do what we have to, to get-r-done.

i have a 1961 fordson dexta with a perkins deisel engine. it does not like starting fluid. don't want to crack pistons or rings. it doesn't like it. suggestions on cold weather starts?

There is a starter upgrade/different starter that can be used on the dexta. It'll turn the engine faster. Found this out from my neighbor/tractor mechanic. When I see him again I'll ask what he uses.
Had an uncle that had a dexta diesel. We spent lots of time pulling him and the tractor on winter mornings trying to get it started. I know what you mean about cold starting one of those. Good tractors in warm weather though.

I don't know what you consider a heating contraption, or where you store your tractor, but I store mine in a barn with no power and if I had the problem, I would throw a cheap tarp over it and a kerosene heater under it and let it heat for a few minutes before starting.

Don't either that Perkins. You will crak a ring for sure. You are right, they don't like either.
A couple of suggestions that work:
A rag over the air intake that has a little gasoline in it. Gasoline is easier than either on your rings.
If you can, get a power inverter for your car that will run a blow dryer. Place the blow dryer in the air intake with it on hot air and crank it (the tractor engine). All it takes is a little shot of warm air in the intake to get it going.
Used to use that trick with my old IH-6.9 with shot glow plugs.
