coffee with cream

i noticed the gearbox oil on my Woods BM looked like coffee with heavy cream in it. i guess water got into it. i guess ill drain and re fill. the seals etc look fine. i can now keep the mower indoors so it should not be subject to outside elements. any other suggestions?

I would say your guess is correct. If you have to leave it outside - put a waterproof cover over the gearbox. The neighbor put a plastic garbage can lid over his rotary cutter gear box. Held it in place with two bungee cords.

good tip. i thought about that very thing...of course after i noticed the muck.

Get a pail that is at least as deep as the gearbox is tall. Then, cut a wide slot down the side of the pail so it fits over the gearbox.

Sometimes you have to flush it out a couple of times, or at least that was my experience with a Troybilt that I bought for parts.

The only other suggestion is that you don't drink it. The stuff may look like coffee but...

More likely condensation, than rain getting in.

Depending how the vent is, water could be sucked in when it rains. When it rains, it cools the gearbox that was sitting in the sun and if water pools around the vent, it could get sucked in.
