I am trying to replace the clutch in my 1500D Yanmar. I took the parts out to confirm that those that I ordered were correct. That was 6 months ago. I am now trying to reassemble the clutch (all new) and the throw out bearing and carrier. The questions are:

1. The clutch plate has a flange on 1 side. Does it face forward to the engine or backward to the rear of the tractor?
2. The throw out bearing carrier has a hole in it that looks like it could be a drain or a lubrication point. Does the hole face up or down.
I attach some photos to clarify my questions. The plate shown is the old one Thank in advance. This forum has not let me down.

The flat side goes toward the flywheel. The release bearing sleeve needs to roll over 180 degrees from your middle picture. Am I correct thinking you have a green 1500?

I do have a green 1500D. Thanks Winston for your help.

I will reassemble the next time I am at my lake house.

I got a post from Aaron with Hoyte and he says the hole is normally installed down. Since the hole is on the side of the short radius of the carrier (as shown in my photo) your reply would mean the hole is installed to the top (up)? Which do way do you think is right??? I think right now I am back where I started!

Thanks,
Gary

I guess I was thinking the carrier was symmetrical and you would want the "drain" hole in the bottom. After looking further, the carrier is not symmetrical though so my theory is shot :).

It looks like the hole goes up after-all but I can not think of any logical reason that you would want the hole facing up (see position of tapered ears in attached picture).

I'm sticking with my first post. I believe that will keep your springs on the centerline of the shaft.

There are no springs inside the housing. The spring for the clutch pedal is outside the housing and accessable without any assembly of the tractor.

My bad! The red has springs, the green doesn't, however, I still believe it goes as I have stated.

With that having a felt in it would it be possible the hole is for lubricating the felt and then in turn the brass bushing. I don't know this at all, just putting it out there for thought. I will conclude by advising you to go with whatever Aaron says. He is by far more educated than me on Yanmars.

Too bad I apparently told him the wrong thing the first time :)

That actually sounds pretty good. I'll research it a little more tomorrow and see if any of the manuals mention the mystery hole.

Thanks Winston and Aaron for your interest and help. I think at this time the consensus is to put the hole up. I assume I can put some oil in the hole and it will lub the felt and the shaft and then the bushing. I won't return to the lake house till this weekend and I'll start the reassembly then. I think the term "mystery hole" is definitely appropriate!
