closed or open system

When I bought my tractor, a 1980's ford 1100, the owner told me that the hydraulics were a closed system. I did not think anything of it until I started installing a new control valve on the FEL, and read that a closed system needed a cartridge kit, which I dont have. I started to do some research, and it seems to me pretty unlikely that this would be a closed loop system, but I may be wrong. Does anyone know, or can anyone even make an educated guess ?

I second Rick! For the most part open is used until about 100 horsepower for most makes.
