Cleaning eyeglasses, why is there only one good way?

Alcohol/water mix. That's what's in the little spray bottle of lens cleaner that the optometrist sells for $3. I mix my own and use a Kleenex wipe.

I had to quit using the plastic lenses and go back to glass due to scratching the plastic lens. If you don't have running water to remove any sand, or other abrasives, rubbing with even the softest cloths scratch up plastic really quickly. I used to go thru 2 pairs a year due to scratching the lens from cleaning with a dry cloth.
Glass don't scratch but are susceptible to grinding or welding spatter, so it is a trade off. At least I can get a year or more out of my glass lenses before needing a replacement.

This works good in a pinch. Been wearing eyeglasses of one sort or another for 54 years. A dab of Dawn with a bunch of water is good too as is your breath when the humidity is just right. A clean soft cloth is wonderful. A Kleenex without any lotion in it is okay but nothing like an old cotton hankerchief thats been washed soft. Take care of your eyes. One of mine just acted up and operating with only one is a challenge.

You should get running water in your garage.

My garage utility sink is a prized possession. Elevation was too low for the septic so it just has a daylight drain out behind the house. Probably best that way!

A week or so ago I was emptying a small bottle of bleach into a larger container. A drop splashed on my coated plastic lens and completely removed the coating. The resulting spot (about 1/4 inch dia) is opaque and very bothersome. Basically my glasses are ruined.

Many optical centers have a 1 year warranty that will replace the glasses or the lens if something happens to them. Usually a one time replacement. I had one set of my regular glasses get a bad scratch on them when I was hunting....walking thru the woods in the dark, on my way out....didn't want to scare the game so I didn't turn on my light. walked into a branch.

Clorox wipes here. It's just something that SWMBO stocks in the kitchens and most bathrooms.


Yeah, they don't damage my eyeplastics.


I used to buy $3 readers, but the last batch went up to $6 or $7. I don't think they have anti-glare coating. Perhaps because my requirements have gradually changed I stopped buying the expensive $12 plastics at Walmart. I'm ROUGH on my eyeplastics. I wear them for reading and fine work. Routinely I'll break a bow off my reading plastics by snagging them on something. Partially because they are so inexpensive I keep them scattered throughout the houses, vehicles, workshops. Because I'm so rough on them it's very rare a pair gets too scratched for usage.

When I first started wearing glasses, I had several pair of the inexpensive readers. They worked fine..but my vision continued to get worse over the years until everything is blurry without my glasses. And I'm a pain in the backside diva when it comes to my vision. I use one of the harder Poly carb type lenses for my regular glasses....my sunglasses are Poly carb. I will stop there because I don't want everyone to make fun of me.

zeiss lenswipes, $5 for 100 at wawlmart. Good enough for expensive camera lenses and sensors.

I checked and my warranty has run out. Cost $200 Canadian to get the damaged lens replaced. It's bifocal btw.

Yeah that's what I will do. But I'm surprised that I am gradually getting used to the spot - didn't even notice it this morning until I got to this TBN thread So as I type it is bugging me again.
