im looking for a 4x2 gator to supplement my 6x4 diesel. its mostly for fun would i find the power (acceleration) to be very lacking in the 4x2 ? my 6x4 does have a new clutch so its slower then it used to be and tops off at 15 like a 4x2 instead of the standard 18.

the reason im getting a cheap gator instead of something else is i could trade in a mower and pay for a lot of it that way.

MY 4x2 goes where I want it to, and haven't found it for lack of power to get around. I am actually amazed at the places where it will go, and much impressed with its fit and finish in the meantime.
Not sure what you mean by 'cheap', but am assumming it is the price.

yeah i meant cheap as opposed to the 11 some thousand for a 6x4, by no means is 6 grand cheap either though. the 6x4 will remain the workhorse and i will just run around in the 6x2. i think it will actually be funner, i find the 6x4 a little to hard to get stuck or slide around in and such when im trying to have a little fun.

I like those features of mine too. Grand kids do as well.
Dear wife thinks we drive too fast, but it doesn't go fast, just feels like it. Sure a monkey in the woods when running on and off the trails. But I don't bust brush with it. Not interested in too many scratches. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Will attach a pic.

$11,000 for a 6x4??? I paid $7200 for my 6x4. As far as the 4x2's they are nice. What about the HPX? It has 4x4 or 4x2. It's got more power and it's fun to slide around.

I have places where a 4 * 2 will not cut it. Consider resale also when buying a 2 wheel drive instead of 4wd.

The Gator's have excellent resale whether they are 4x2, 6x4, 4x4 or whatever. They rarely last very long on the dealer lot.

We bought my boys 9 & 11 a Polaris Ranger TM it was under $6000. I added the full roll and fender gaurds. I use it also and can load my 16 hp welder and all my tools it just keeps going. It also has a 2" hitch on the back so all of my ball mounts will work. The boys have a 160 acs mostly woods with gas lines and some bottems. They have never walked back to the house. Being 2x4 with the rear locked it does ok with me in mud but not like with them. We have had it a year this month I think it has 100hrs on it. I have been thinking about getting me a 4 x4 ranger. But now I just ask if I can have there keys.

Do you get fleet discounts or somthing? I just had a customer tell me that the JD dealer who is 5 miles from me was quoting a demo 6x4 with 80 hours (their lot machine) for $8600.

Neil,

The MSRP on the base 6x4 is only $8299. So that dealer is ripping that guy off bigtime. Mine had some extras like the dump bed, bed liner, mats, etc. The last one I got was 23% off of list. I usually get 18-25% off of list on them depending on the deals available at the time.

Cowboydoc, I'm definitely hiring you as my purchasing agent. 25% is more than I have heard anyone around here getting, that is for sure. Are you including frt & setup in your list prices b4 discount? Many dealers play around with that, kinda like "dealer prep" used to be in the auto arena.

One other big consideration: accessories/options on any JD product, even this old model, can make quite a difference--tires, cargo box lift (comes specifically "uninstalled" per the JD "build your own"), cab, etc. No one mentioning prices in this thread seems to have been real detailed on that score. Could make quite a difference.

I like my 96 model (almost 1800 hrs) 6x4 but it just died on startup attempt Saturday. I am betting one of those ridiculous "fusible link" wires fried, per the $175 service manual I have. Out will come the Fluke soon as I make back to Mt Burgha.

Jim,

Freight and setup is exactly as you said, it's just like dealer prep. To be honest the dealer has never even tryed to insult me that way. If you buy the accessories when you get the unit Deere pays the dealer to install them. If you wait until after the initial sale then the labor comes out of your pocket.

The older models I can usually get 23% off of list. If you can catch them when they have had the models on the floor for awhile or during special deals you can get extra off if you don't take the special financing, etc. Most people don't know it but if you don't take the special financing etc. and pay cash Deere gives the dealer money back from that.

Anymore if you have horses or cattle as a business Deere has special corporate partner relationships that you can buy equipment with no haggling at all at 15-25% off of list price. Monsanto and other agricultural companies also have this special corporat partner relationship.

My experience is the pricing varies quite a bit from dealer to dealer. I bought an 05' HPX Trail Gator early this spring for $9700. That price included bed lift, bed liner and floor mats. Another dealer had an 04 HPX Gator (not a Trail) with similar accessories that had 36 hours (demo) and he was stuck above $10,000.

When I purchased the Gator we settled on the price before I decided to use Deere's financing.

As far as used equipment goes I haven't had a lot of luck finding good deals from the dealers. It does happen but you have to be patient.

Every year John Deere supplie's the EAA. in oshkosh, Wi. alot of equipment including gator's, after the show they are sold off as demo's, I bought my trail gator that way afew year's back, It came with 21hrs and a warranty, I use it in tandem with a miniexcavator on my tree farm operation, I only have good thing's to say about the gator.

One more drink of Gator-Aid before the New Year:

Darkman Gator

I had to laugh when one of the home's long term (and fairly young stroke victim) residents chimed at me "ought to be nice for $14 g's!" while I took pictures.

Who said they hire animals as guards! Crocodiles would be even more effective.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
