Oil & Fuel changing the fuel filter

I started to change the fuel filter on my yanmar 2420D last weekend. I shut the fuel off and started to loosen the big nut that hold the bowel on. I thought quite a bit of fuel came out so I stoped right a way.
How much fuel can I expect to come out? Is their another way to bi pass the fuel shut off?
I have never done this so I not sure what to expect.

You will get whatever fuel can spill out of the top of the bowl.. maybee more if the shutoff leaks a bit. Just have a rag handy as a jar is gonna be hard to get in there.

I have in the pask use a pair of spring tongs to crimp off a rubber fuel line when chainging a filter .. etc. I try to do it as fast as possible so as not to have to fiddle with it much for bleeding the lines. Add new cartridge.. then open the valve and let it fill a bit and start tightening down.. leaving it dribbling to get the air out. If you are lucky that will be all there is to it.
