Does the new element go in the sediment bowl hole side down? it makes no sense the fuel filter housing has a embossing with a hole, right lining up with the element that has a slight embossing no hole. Just got tractor somebody put a oversized bowl on it also had no spring in the bowl. got the right size bowl now and smaller element now I want to make sure I am installing it right the illustrations are not the greatest.

KENMAC that is the filter pack but does the element go hole side up or down?

the fuel drains through the hole in the center of the filter from the fuel tank (usually hole up) & out through the pleats to the injector pump. I'am assuming your fuel is gravity flow to the injector pump

Kenmac, on mine the fuel starts at the outside of the element then passes through. Set up this way, you can see the junk, including water, by looking at the bowl.

I thought the whole world did it like mine.
(The last time I said that here I was enlightened by several of you! :) :) :) )

I was looking for an old post to illustrate this, and found one that happens to respond to several recent topics here. My third photo shows the correct Yanmar filter element and bowl compared next to one of those short clear plastic bowls someone mentioned recently.

The rest of the post talks about VN refurbs, and how my US Yanmar had similar nuisance problems when I got it.

BobC, I think if you have a filter and bowl like my third photo then the hole in the element slides up onto a matching tube in the filter housing.

Cal, I just looked at mine & the hole in the filter is toward the top. I took the filter off & there is a round piece on the filter housing that the hole in the filter slides on. If mine were with the flat side of the filter up it would stop the flow of fuel to the filter bowl. Turn the fuel back on the fuel flows through the hole & out the fliter pleats to fill the bowl. There may be different set ups to where the hole goes down but, mine doesn't

Cal, I when I replaced mine , the hole was toward the top (up). So, I replaced it in the same position & it has worked fine so far. I wonder if mine was installed wrong from the start

Yours is right.

I think installing it with the hole up, and slid over the little ... uh... protuberance, is the only way it will fit.

What I meant was that dirty fuel from the tank enters the outer chamber surrounding the element and clean fuel departs the filter via that upper hole. This way you can see the junk clinging to the outside of the element, or settled to the bottom of the semi-transparent bowl.

If it were set up with the inlet on the center hole, you couldn't see what it had caught. I don't think any of them were originally set up by Yanmar like that. Maybe a refurb was configured that way?

Ok , I misunderstood your post. I thought you were saying the hole on yours goes down toward the bottom of the filter bowl & got to thinking there may be different filter housings/ bowls for different models.

Well BobC we finally answered your question.

A respected dealer, a domestic Yanmar owner, and a gray Yanmar owner all put a lot of thought into this and we all agree on the right answer. The hole goes up! :) :) :)

hi guys!
yes, i concur! I broke my fuel bowl yesterday and had to replace; incident is fresh on my mind, the hole goes up, connected to a fitting coming from the fuel feed (at least on mine). good luck BobC

Q: How many Yanmar owners does it take to change a fuel filter?

A: Undetermined. They haven't all shown up yet! :D:D:D

Now , if we could just get Tallyho8 's problem fixed we'd be some good mechanics:D

The fuel system is closed. It has to be closed and free of air. If even a tiny bit of air gets sucked into the fuel lines the engine will loose power and die. If there is air in the lines to start with the engine will most likely not run at all.

what I was talking about was, my fuel line had collapsed on the inside allowing very little fuel to the pump. My tractor would hardly run. I replaced the line . Now tractor runs fine

while we are on this subject, I have similar filter on my YM2500, however, prev owner lost the spring in bottom of bowl. where can I get just the spring? thx to all

TMAR04, John Deere sells the spring. 0.24 cents each. Have to purchase 8 though. I have seven left over!!

It would cost more to ship them than they are worth.

Hey Rock, on one of my tractors i lost the spring, it's still running fine and the fuel filter is still solidly engaged. If you go and buy the springs, let me know, I'll share the cost of them if you'll send me a couple. Thanks and good luck :)
