check out your hands when you saw. look specifically at your thumb. is it wrapped around the bar, good! or is it resting on top the bar, bad. number one cause of injury is kickback. thumb on top and you hand will slide off during kickback. wrap your thumb around the top handle and keep you arm straight and the saw, if it kicks back will go up instead of rotate towad you. while i am at it keep your big old head to the side not on top of the cut. in a kickback you will move your head but the saw will hit your shoulder. always keep all body parts out of the possible arc of the bar. be careful!

Woody:

Does that mean I shouldn't stand on the top of a 8 ft. step ladder and hold the saw by the handle with one hand with the arm fully extended to reach a branch and hold on to the tree with the other hand?

You are either supposed to stand the ladder up in the back of a pick-up or in the FEL of the tractor.

It is okay if you don't start the saw.

Egon,

Yep it's fine, just be sure and hang on to the tree via the branch you are cutting off./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Well it almost worked that way except the branch, at least 6 inches, kinda took a poke at me as it was falling and Knocked me off the ladder and onto my elbow and shoulder. Threw the saw and it landed 10 feet away still running. That really browned me off as All day I'd been having trouble trying to get it to idle. Did another three hours work that day but the next day was " sit in shade and moan " as my elbow had taken a good hit. But hey; I had all the gear on including double hearing protection. That way I coundn't hear myself moaning' groaning and commenting on cerebal powers I've been endowed with.

There was a camper on the p/u and the tractor wasn't there.

yes, i have a sthil 009 that is for one handin ina trees, but you missed the point. thumb around the handle and straight arm, plus body parts to the side. H___ i did 100 cord part time with a saw and a maul. kickback is ugly. no scars here.
