You should give to your customers free.

You can watch a lot of the dvd on their website, tell them that.
Stihl charges $25 for a 50 cent plastic chainsaw case, this includes that dvd.

It's actually a $35 chainsaw case and doesn't come with the DVD.

I think chainsaw safety is very important. I have a few logger buddies and every single one of them have either came close to getting injured or have gotten injured. These guys are professionals. If they can get hurt the guy that comes in off the street looking to buy one for the first time will sure to get hurt without a little guidance or a good talking to about safety using one.

If all you are charging is $5 for the dvd then as a dealer you are worried about people buying chainsaws and their safety give it to them with the purchace of the saw. If you are worried about the money charge and extra couple bucks for the saw. People wont know the difference and they will most likely watch it as they think it is free.

I have purchased many different types of equipement (lawn tractor, bush hog, mower, saw, and other that I cant think of right now) and most of them came with a dvd or vhs and safety videos.

Excellent post. You have to be carefull running a chainsaw, and like with most equipment, there's right and wrong ways to use one. I've got 4 chainsaws, 2 of which are Stihl saws, the largest an MS-660 with a 36" bar that I mill with, along with an MS-361 for firewood. I bought the Stihl DVD after having run my smaller saws for years. Should have done it sooner, as there's lots of information on the DVD that anyone running a saw should know. I agree, the dealers should at least offer the DVD when youre spending upwards of $600 for one of the pro model saws. Safety is good business. When I bought the DVD, I bought a second one for my friend who just bought his first firewood saw, and sent it to him since he never ran a saw. I've never had a safety incident with any of my saws, and hope I never will, but being educated on proper saw handling and use is a good start.

I'll second that idea - another $5 on the price of a saw would'nt change my mind on the purchase.

well - insurance companies should provide some sort of discount for watching these videos for private owners since most accidents seem to come from homeowners, not business workers. If i bought a saw from a dealer and not from a box store and watched the movie there in store - i would expecct to get some sort of certificate to send in to my insurance company for either a discount or waiver on premiums increases.;) what do you guys think ?

If you're really cheap anyone can watch it online on the Stihl site.

I am - and I did watch it on the Sthil site. The main thing I learned is that it's pronounced like "steel" and not "still".

The video on the web site talks much more about maintenance safety.

I agree well stated.

I'd bet if you made up some new dust jackets for the DVD with some kind of new title like "A Manly Man's Guide to Chainsaws" you'd have them flying off the shelves.

Someone will come up with a better title, but I think you get the idea.

I asked the salesman for the chainsaw DVD when I bought my MS 460-hardly a beginner saw-and he did not say a thing he just gave it to me.

It had some nice things in it and I would not think twice about recommending it to anyone with a chain saw.

JDKid most of the professional loggers I have met are injured when they go too fast and skip safety measures. I would say this is the cause 90% of the time. Bad luck is also involved, but as professional loggers this is part of the game. Logging is one of the most dangerous professions in the world. OSHA has some excellent information available for everyone who uses a chain saw from home owners to (logging) business owners.
