On the front axles I can attach a chain however it appears that it will hard to get a straight pull using the rear axles. The R4 tires are so wide there is little of the rear axle exposed.

Put the chains in a X fashion. What I mean is hook to the right axle and the left side of the trailer, ect.

Can't really see in my picture, but the chains cross under the tractor just as Diamondpilot said, in an x and it gets it so that the chains just clear the tires.

It looks like maybe you need longer chains. I can still see some of the chain binder. ;)

Thanks. I had not thought of that. Thats why I enjoy TBN in that I can benefit from real world experience.

Harbor freight binders and chains, no problems. 3/8 chain on the tractor and 5/16 chain on bucket and Gannon. Although I use these on this tractor-trailer, on our bigger stuff, it is all USA made stuff. ;)

interesting tires on the trailer, load range?

rear hook up, gave me a scare only once and thats cause there was ice on the trailer, tractor slid to one sice about 3 inches when i was turning and hit a hole. Im on locked down and in truck in less than 3 minutes. I use a mix of ratchet binders and just binders, all grade 70 chain/hooks. DOT guy complemented me on my tie down in the parking lot one day and told me to call him if i ever had any trouble with ohp. I was coming home from my kids soccer game tonight and passed a guy pulling a b7100, had the straps tied all over the thing but to noghting that would hold in an accident, tractor was bouncin and moving foreward and back on the trailer, some people

I love this site!!!

I knew there had to be a better way to tie a tractor down, but didn't know what it was until now.

Thanks for sharing.

May not matter to the cops where you live, but strictly speaking, shouldn't that hook be on the inside of the stake pocket?

Rusty

???????????????
drop through and wrap around, chain can not come unhooked like this if thats what your talking about

hematite,
I presume that you took this picture before you also chained down the FEL bucket?

nope dont chain down fel, tractor is to lite to fall into dot regs around here for that. Tractor cant move, so why chain down bucket? The bucket is flat on the floor with no pressure on it, have no problems with a bouncing bucket so I just dont see the point do you?

Sorry - looks like you are good after all. I was given a hard time once about nothing allowed to protrude farther out than stake pocket. Cop made me change all hooks to inside stake pocket (chain & hook entering from below and chain kept flat against side of trailer). Probably just one odd cop with his own interpretation of the rules.

I have had them tell me they should be done as he shows but on the front or back sides of the pocket. This might come from the trailers that have a protective rail surrounding the pockets.

I recall the rule cited at the time did somehow relate to protective rails. Since my trailer at the time had no protective rails, it became a matter of the cop's interpretation of the rule's intent.

Nope, you're not doing it right.
Anything that isn't held in place mechanically (a pin for instance) must be chained to the floor of the trailer. A FEL or a backhoe is the perfect example.
Hydraulics alone isn't enough.
It must be held in place horizontally and vertically.

I agree, it's stupid, but that's the rule.

Typically you can get one over the bucket than thru the frame of the tractor in one chain piece. Not always, but sometimes. (works real well with SS's)

In Canada yes, it must be inside
In USA No, doesn't matter.
This made me chuckle because when I tried to check it out this morning, I came to the opposite conclusion.

I give up!

I should further explain what I posted last night. Yesterday, I found the following sketch on an official Canadian website.

905_Fig_Stake_Pocket_Test_Eng.gif

Test Method 905 - Trailer Cargo Anchoring Devices - Motor Vehicle Safety Standards - Safe Vehicles - Road & Motor Vehicle Safety - Road Transportation - Transport Canada

While not part of any Canadian tie-down rule that I could find, it does suggest that the Canadian government would tolerate this configuration if it tests this way.

On the other hand, US DOT rules are not clear on this point. First cop reads it and says no protective rail so no problem. Next cop reads same rule and sees "intent". You can't win. Smile and do what the cop says.
