[censored] knotholes

This post has nothing to do with tractors. Just had the house, which is board and batten, stained with a quality light gray opaque stain, and now the knotholes are bleeding through. Anyone know the best way to permenently seal these blemishes so they stop showing through the finish? I guess I'll have to touch-up/recoat the affected areas...but I'd like to only do it ONCE! Thanks

4lb orange shellac works, but it will affect the way the stain looks and will never match the surroundin wood. Other products such as Kilz and BullsEye 123 have significant amounts of pigment that will also affect the appearance of opaque stains. You're between a rock and a hard place with an opaque stain.

You will never do it once. We treated the interior and exterior pine trim with Kilz, then 3 coats paint. Did the interior again two years ago and the knots still bleed through.

We did cedar shake for siding - works great with bleaching oil - do it once for a lifetime.

I built my first personal house when I was 23 yrs old. Had a trucker that specialized in lumber across the road from me. Bought my 105 siding from him. Was full of knots. My dad told me to cover the knots with shellac or they would bleed through the paint, which I did. Didn't know there was more than one kind. Then put on paint primer & final coat. I never saw a knot from then on, and the old trucker asked me what I did & told me he never thought I could make his lumber look that good.

Thanks - I'll do a test with shellac and see how it works. The opaque stain covers as well as paint, so I'm optimistic that there will be no difference in appearance.
