I had A T & T for years and was satisfied, but Verizon has a little better area for less money. Switched to Verizon and at least initally have been unhappy with it. Not as reliable and some places where I used to talk fine on A T & T I can't even make a call at all. There are some areas the Verizon works better, seems like inside buildings it works better as a matter of fact. But overall I'd go back to A T& T if I hadn't signed up for 2 years.

On two separate occasions, my wife's phone has refused to make a call for 2 or 3 DAYS on Verizon. The last time I took it to a Verizon store and by then it was working OK. They replaced both of our phones and gave us a free month. So far we haven't had any more problems.

We have Kyocera phones - real cheapies, and they suck.

"I know the new legislation allows me to keep my old number on a new cell phone account"

I have heard there are complications with that. Hopefully it will all work out somehow.
Oh, sorry about the "other" conversation Okeedon, I was mean to you for no reason, had a bad day and took it out on you, hope you will forgive me, have felt badly about it since.
Merry Christmas to all /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. J

I've got a Goldstar(LG) phone with Verizon and beat the snot out of it - the Motorola we had at work kept breaking - drop it - it's broke - the LG we now have (because mine was so tough) has been dropped and kicked and... whatever and still works fine. Verizon's coverage here is as good as any other - Houston area is big and all the companies are well represented --- My Verizon has worked from Houston to Vegas to Cedar Rapids and I've had no problem .... except at Wharton (small town SW of Houston)

Well, Bird, that's just scary. I have exactly the same service (Cingular) and 250 minute plan as you. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Unfortunately, that plan is no longer available. They've monkeyed with the minutes and added "rollover" so now of course it's about $10 more a month.

I've had the same phone for over three years, an Ericsson A1228d, and I have to tell you it's bulletproof. Big and ugly, but bulletproof. I added an extended battery and belt clip to it and it goes everywhere with me.

Now the real reason for my post. I ran over it with my tractor about 6 weeks ago. Not just once, but many, many times. It fell off of the fender where I clipped it. I noticed it was gone and went looking for it. Oops, right where I had been clearing some brush . . . the ground was pure rock rubble. There was my phone. I knew it was broken for good. . . NOT. I hit the on button and it powered right up. It's pretty beat up, and I need a new phone, but I kind of have a sentimental attachment to it. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Oh, and the extended battery I bought for it about a year ago. Well it was the last one they had in stock and they told me sorry we won't be providing accessories for that phone any more. Planned obsolescence at it's finest.

Soooo, get the service that provides the best coverage for your area and get a good phone.

I started to send you a PM, but since you said the above in public, I feel you deserve my response to be public, too. No forgiveness is necessary, you just gave me one of the best Christmas presents I ever got. I extend and wish the same for you.

Thanks Okeedon /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Back to the cell phones, has anyone tried the new walkie talkie feature I am hearing about. I wonder how that works out or how it is different from just a regualr cell to cell call? I guess i should read up on it
I have had good luck with Motorola and Nokia phones, not so good with certain others. Each to their own.
I see where these new camera phones are becoming a public nuisance, imagine that /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. J

Just as an aside, cellphone batteries are easily available on eBay. There are many batteries for the Ericsson A1228d listed.

John, I haven't run over our Ericcson yet, but it's been dropped a few times, and so far no ill effects. It'll be 2 years old in April and is still using the original battery. Since I wear hearing aids, I've asked about speaker phone types, but so far apparently Cingular doesn't have them. One of my brothers has a Panasonic that's a speaker phone, but he's with AT&T. And since I don't use the cell phone myself very much, I just won't spend the money to go out and buy a more expensive phone. And in addition to the AC adapter/charger in the house, we have the cigar lighter adapter/charger for the car that also has the mic and speaker to make it hands free in the car but we seldom use that. Our Ericcson is a model R278d. We got it in Waco and couldn't have asked for better service. The lady there let me try out almost everything in the store, and when I picked this one, she even offered to let me take it home for a week before making a final decision if I wanted, but I decided that wasn't necessary.

And of course you're right that our plan is no longer available, but they tell me as long as we have it, we can keep it, so it's the right plan for us. We've never used all the available minutes, even with my wife calling her mother and brothers and sister in West Virginia every weekend.

It's new to Verizon, Sprint and any other who may be offering it, but it's been at the heart of Nextel for years. It's mostly why Nextel is pricier than others. Nextel has had some kind of lock on the technology, I don't know if it was a patent or an exlusive deal with Motorola or what, but apparently iit ran out this year and others are jumping on it, or using some other kind of technology to emulate it. I don't pretend to know how it works, but I can tell you how it appears to the user. I can only speak to the Nextel version, but the others must be similar.

There's a button on the side of the phone which acts like a two-way radio. All Nextel users have a second number, mine is 159*57376*2, which is their Direct Connect number. There's also a "mode" button. You switch out of phone mode and into Direct Connect mode, then either access your speed dial entries or manually enter another user's DC number, and push the button. Your phone "chirps" to indicate you accessed the other, and the other phone "chirps" to indicate someone is calling. The other person then pushes the btton to talk, and you push your button to answer. It's single channel like a radio; only one person can talk at a time. Each time the button is pushed or released the phone "chirps". You can hear a Nextel Direct Connect user in a crowd.

It's a private conversation between the two phones; unlike a conventional radio, no one else can hear the conversation. My guess is that because it's single channel, it uses up a lot less cellular resources than a regular phone conversation so they can have a lot more people using it.

The numbers are only available if someone gives you theirs. Thus, you easily pick and choose who you want to have immediate, direct access to you. Traditional two-way radio users have been farmers, contractors, service technicians, truckers, realtors, etc. In our area, they have all switched over to Nextel. At one time, there were something called "fleets" by Nextel that limited cross connections - ag workers could only call other ag workers, for example. That distinction is gone, and the last barrier to fall has been statewide-only connections; they're now national, pretty much everywhere Nextel has service (they're still rolling that one out). There is a small charge for the National access; $10/month for unlimited or $0.10/minute. I don't pay it because I can use my free long distance when I'm out of state, which is rarely, anyway. If I spent a lot of time out of state, I'd pay the $10/month, gladly.

Verizon is now offering it, but not in all their service areas. I have a friend who works at Radio Shack who told me that Sprint is now offering it. He said they use a different technology, something to do with the internet, but I didn't really pay any attention to him. He tried to get me to dump my Nextel and switch to the Sprint, and I simply said, "Who would I talk to? Everyone uses Nextel", and he had to agree.

My Nextel is an i1000plus which they don't make any longer. I love it. It's the only flip phone offered ny Nextel that has a full window the see the entire display with the flip cover closed. When I flipped my tractor into a hole and ended up sitting in 3' of water at the bottom of the hole, my phone was clipped to my belt and was underwater. It powered up once it was dry, but it was unreliable. I not only bought another on EBay, I bought 2 more, becausa a guy had moved to an area that didn't have Nextel service and was selling his and his wife's phone. Saved a bunch of money, got all the extra batteries and chargers and such with them, and stayed with the phone style I like.

I had Alltel for a few years and checked out the Tracfone's and bought a Tracfone and I love the Tracfone(how many times can you say Tracfone ? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif ),no more monthly cell phone bill and the service is GREAT.
Everytime I sent a bill to Alltel I felt like I was getting the shaft, they have so many different plans and options it was confusing to me and I know I was paying for service I was not using. Now with the Tracfone it displays how many minutes (air time) all of the time the phone is on.I highly recommend Tracfone.

If I could be sure the Verizon service is going to be better I would spend the money and get better phones. However, if I'm gonna spend money, I might want to pay off the Verizon contract and get AT&T/Nokia. I always liked my Nokia phones with A T& T, but you can't get them with Verizon, because all Verizon phones, at least around here, have to have a pull-out antenna to pick up analog signals in non-digital areas. You never know when you should pull the antenna out or not.

Actually, recently we have had very little trouble with Verizon, so everything is OK now.

One thing I did do, I ordered a digital cable for the Kyocera phone and I am able to successfully dial up to my regular earthlink account at about 19K from my laptop. Comes in handy when I'm out of pocket and need to check email.

I got 2 Kyocera phones for $39 at signup. The Motorolas were at least $100 each, and no buy one - get one free offer on those.

I don't undestand all this stuff, I have used my phones from mountain tops and even in an airplane. I still say it is your junky phones, not the service. That said, I know cellular coverage is a strange beast to get a handle on and what works one place may not be so good in another. The only thing I see when I look at coverage maps is that both Cingular and Verizon have virtually the entire country covered, none ot the others do. It is weird how you can get signal some places and not others, in some building but not the one your in when the important call comes along, frustrating but I fear it is simply the limit of technology and physics with the current frequencies and power levels. Not sure that any particular service is technically all that much better than another so it comes down to coverage, pricing, doodads and phone selection. Aside from the service itself no other component of the cell system can have as much impact on your satisfaction as the phone unit in your hand. Buying cheap phones with an otherwise good service is a prescription for dissatisfaction, if that service is in fact a good service, who knows the answer. J

Verizon also has a dial-up service that updates your phone over the air. You dial *228, and the roaming/local/service codes are updated in your phone. I didn't know that the first couple years I had the phone, and I went in to the Cellular One (Verizon) service store and they found that my problems were related to not updating the phone. I have had good service for the past five years with Verizon. I don't know if other phone services have this update feature.

Many thanks for the verizon tip. I have only been able to use my cell in the barn while standing right in front of a certain window and tilting my head to the outside. After reprograming it I can now wander around to my hearts content and still keep the signal. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Always wondered why my wifes bottom of the line nokia got better range than my fancy motorola.

Thanks
Jack
