I just picked up a 790 and am going to buy manuals. Curious how the CD manuals are to navigate. I normally use the paper JD manuals at work but I've used a number of other CD manuals. Some are easy to navigate others are down right frustrating. How are the JD's?
Thanks

My JD 5303 manual on CD is just a PDF file with a little auto launcher. It's about 1300 pages.

It does not have any explicit navigation capabilities other than those found in the Acrobat Reader, but the search capability is pretty powerful. Given the choice, I would definitely go the CD route again.

Added bonus #1: I just copied the PDF to my local hard drive so I wouldn't have to schlep CDs around.

Added bonus #2: It was about half the price of the printed manual.

Thank you, I'll give the CD's a shot. I've had both good and bad experiences with electronic manuals from different companies. Sounds like the JD version should fall in the good category.

On a side note I'm reworking my battery compartment to utilize a group 35 Optima. The OE unit had been poorly cared for and the acid has eaten the paint off the battery tray, no structural damage just needs some rust stop and fresh paint. Looking at that spendy aluminum radiator sitting in close proximity, I opted away from the puke top battery. I plan to post some pics as it progresses.

I have the CD manual for my 4200, and its around 700-pages long as I recall. I copied the PDF file to my hard drive, and since Deere didn't add links and bookmarks to the file, I embarked on a weeks long fill in project to add links and bookmarks to make navigation easier. I would usually do one chapter at a time, with the electrical section being the exception since its so long. This is something Deere should have done; but didn't regardless of the CD being half the price of the paper manual. I then printed out a copy for the garage.

I would however still get the CD because you can easily re-print damaged pages versus buying a whole new paper manual, and you can read the manual on your PC should you need to check something quickly without having to go out to the shop.

Sounds like a fun project for you. ;)

So I don't suppose you'd be interested in indexing the 5003 series manual?

Fun is relative Wombat. ;)

What are you willing to trade for my indexing the 5003 manual? ;)

How is that 5003 treating you by the way?

Probably nothing worth your time. I think I just need to hunker down and start my own.

Very well. It runs like a champ. Here are my mechanical events so far:

1. Leaking diesel from fuel line -- Tightened band clamp on fuel line -- I think it was not retightened with dealer installed the block heater.
2. Leaking oil from hydraulic oil filter -- Tightened filter.
3. PIP for steering cylinder -- Dealer came out and replaced cylinder even though my cylinder was probabably fine.
4. Installed horn, rear work light, and canopy -- All easy installs.
5. Installed second SCV -- Only after some inappropriate language.

I run it to mow, move snow, and grade the road, although in our current drought situation I don't get to do nearly enough of any of these tasks.

Glad to hear your 5003 is treating you well Wombat. All the little niggling problems remind me of what I had with mine in the first couple of years of ownership. The worst was when the battery leaked acid on the HST oil cooler and I had hot oil going everywhere. It was repaired under the FAF (Fix As Found) program for the 4200 - 4400 tractors where this is a known issue.

I hear you on the 2nd SCV installation and plenty of CAD-talk as I call it. I put in a Power Beyond, 3rd, 4th, and 5th SCV kits and it was quite a project for me to complete. I have pictures of the installation; but my Google Picasa web albums are broken and I can't post pictures.

I did buy the 790 CD manual and have found it to be very easy to navigate through and use. Its one 35 MB PDF file that is nicely indexed. Attached is a picture of the opening screen.
