I have a '90 Case IH 885 2wd no cab. I broke my 540 PTO shaft with a stump grinder and found out yesterday this is not an easy fix! The PTO gear is to big to fit out of the hole in the case and there is a snap ring on the back side. This requires removing top cover from rear axle/hydraulic housing to gain access.
If anyone has a shop manual or experience with this procedure and could offer some insight I would be very grateful! I am pulling sheet metal, fuel tank and rops now. Thanks!

Sorry i couldn't help as I have no experience with your problem, but it sounds like you made it fine. I can understand your concern with doing a job with no experience or guidance. I've found that you just have to get started and it usually works out. Congratulations on getting it done.
