case backhoe brakes

My brother has a Case backhoe. The brakes do not work. He got differing info of fluid use. Some said to use DOT 3 brake fluid, others regular hydraulic fluid. He has no manual. What is correct if the fluid is low?

What era? I know my 580K calls for hydraulic fluid. The previous owner put brake fluid in the master cylinders and they started leaking right after I bought it.

He is not where the tractor is but he thinks it is a CK 580 Case. Where would the serial number be and that may tell us the year etc. Thanks
