1973 580B, I've had this Backhoe for about 20 years so I know how fast it is running just by sound, however the tachometer has now decided to read excessively high, and I think it's a mechanical tach, so I don't understand what is going on, and it varies, sometimes it appears to be reading correct, and other times it's red lined. Anybody have any insight on what is going on?

Sometimes they get crudded up or rusty - you might try taking the tach cable loose on both ends, blowing it out with compressed air, and working some graphite speedometer cable lube down into the outer sleeve - that's basically what it is, is a speedo cable... Steve

(If the cable binds up for any of those reasons, the uneven jerking when it breaks loose will cause erroneous readings. Try not to break any part of it though - they are NOT cheap anymore...
